[40d] Items stuck in upright spikes
« on: February 14, 2009, 10:51:39 pm »

I had a pit of Upright Spike traps that I used to take care of unwanted visitors to my fortress. Occasionally though, it would seem like sometimes they would just vanish - I'd look back a few moments later and there wasn't so much as a corpse left in the traps. I've read on the wiki that bodies could get stuck in the spikes, and would be released when the spikes were retracted, but no body was visible under [t] View items in buildings or left on the floor after the spikes were retracted.

Now, I'm doing some renovation on my fortress, and part of that involved dismantling all my Upright Spikes, and much to my surprise, when each trap is removed it almost literally explodes into vast numbers of bones, clothes, armor, etc.. All apparently items stuck 'outside of space' within the traps that were not inside the trap, nor could be removed by my dwarfs until the trap was dismantled.

Edit: Even after having dismantled the traps and hauled away the visible debris, my dwarfs are still hauling out (Pig tail sock) in huge numbers from the empty tiles were the traps were once placed. It's been the better part of two season now doing very little else besides hauling.

I've actually seen super invisible items like that too where my dwarves were grabbing goblin clothing out of thin air. I think the stuff still appears in the stock menu though.

I think that's intentional; the spikes skewered the items off of the victim.

I doubt it's intentional that the items are totally gone.  I wonder if this is related to the problem with items moving around in a flow sometimes disappearing.

Are you sure they aren't inside the Spike building it'self? You can check with the t menu.

The name of this thread is somewhat misleading.  I clicked it, ready to yell- er, I mean, inform the OP that it is a feature, but then I see it is completely different than what I expected.  It is quite an unusual problem.

Just so I remember

Sounds like a bug report!

I think that the items are being stored inside the actual Large Menacing <x> Spike item which is stored inside the Upright Spike Trap building. Were you able to check out the weapon in the list of items in the <t> menu for the spike trap?

That's awesome to think about that way, you have these huge seven foot spikes at the bottom of a pit and they're all festooned with tattered clothes, skulls, ribcages, and all other manner of crap from the hundreds of visitors you impaled on them!
