Best Murals
« on: February 03, 2009, 07:36:55 am »

What's your the best mural you've seen (or done)?

I'm not talking about engravings, there's another thread for that, but large constructions that is an image.

So far I've seen two, but I've not looked at very many fortresses tbh, one of an ASCII dwarf and an ASCII goblin, and one of a skull. And then there's my own. I give you the Dragon mural of Roomtyphoons!: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-4524-roomtyphoons

(and yes I made this thread so I could show it to the world, is that so wrong?  ;D)

EDIT: spelling.

Link your best ones!

Mmmm... +cat biscuits+

Thank you!

I also found some other murals by searching DFMA, most of which are larger than mine. These are especially awesome:

A giant mural of a skull, made of walls, though so the dwarves cannot see it  ??? It .looks awesome, though, and the rest of the fortress is pretty much a masterpiece as well.

Another Dragon, earlier than mine and way bigger. Not to mention the fact that the entire fortress is a work of art, made with the old 2d version.

I consider copperblazes itself a mural, or close enough. But the axe mural in it isn't bad.

Why is everyone so obsessed with copperblazes? Orbinches walks all over it in terms of visual aesthetics.

Hello!

I have to say that the dragon murals (both of them) are awesome. I applaud the OP for his effort in creating the beautiful mural and also directing people's attention to this aspect of DF.

Unfortunately, I can't contribute anything myself - I usually have mini fortresses with no or low immigration, so I don't have the dwarfpower to do any big projects. I actually did try to do a mural, but it was more symbolic, in one of my first 3D fortresses: I used wood and red stone blocks for the floor of one tower to create a red 'c' there. I know, cheesy, but that was the best my few dwarves could do.

Anyhow, I applaud the masterpieces displayed here.

While not as artsy, Copperblazes has a more functional look combined with it's art that I like.

yeah.  Orbinches is the more artistic fort and superior aestetic design overall, but it tries too hard.  Copperblazes looks like it just sort of happened that way.

My actual favorite I cant remember the name of.  It was a much simpler fort, but it had some very unique designs in it.  One of them was a tree with a brown (wood road or bridge) trunk and green (cage trap) leaves with some purple (pressure plate, i think) fruit hanging from it.  It had several very innovative uses of materials that combined to make a very nice look, even if it didn't have the massive architecture of Copperblazes and Orbinches.

of course, i cant let something like this go without plugging my own humble effort, Sigunlokum.  my giant skulls actually breathed water or lava, with a world flooding option for each.

I remember seeing a Hello Kitty mural at one point.  Does anyone still have a link to that somewhere?

I'd say that it dosen't take all that much dwarfpower to build one of these, just time, and TBH, the hardest part is actually creating the picture. You should really give it a go. :D

Nothing wrong with a 'c' mural, just don't let the cats see it, or they'll get hubris and try to take over the fortress! :o

That sounds... Awesome! :P I wonder if it's still around

My big complaint with a lot of DF murals is that they're impossible to justify in-game.

Sure, you can have a great-looking mural made out of stone walls, but if there's another layer of rock above that somewhere, nobody's ever going to see it. The player can, sure, but I try to think of things in terms of the gameworld itself.

And yeah, the manpower necessary isn't huge. Building walls doesn't take a lot of time at all, even for unaccomplished masons, and you can always do it in small increments.

Unless the mural is outside. And next to a large tower. With windows/fortifications.

Not impossible at all. They have the same purpose as the Nazca lines:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Lines (whatever that purpose may be  ;D)

Floor murals would be a decorative plaza. Murals built from walls underground would be harder to justify, though.

On a couple of these (the second dragon, and axe), segments of the tiles seem to be of different colors, allowing smoother diagonals. How is this achieved? I don't use any tile/graphics sets, in experience floor/wall tiles can only be one color.
