WHAT?
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:57:36 am »

I was playing as an elf spearman, and when I went into a town, i was suddenly surrounded by priests, an elite maceman, and more bowmen. I was killed fast. Why did they attack me? Also, I was in a human town and goblins were there. And they were friendly. Why is this.

Here's two reasons:

1-In your world, the elf civilization is at war with the human civilization.

2-Those humans may have spawned in the same area as those goblins, and are thus friendly with eachother.

I also have another question. Why is it that crossbowmen shoot bolts when you are next to them? Shouldn't they use it like a mace?

They only use it in Melee (and as a Hammer, not a Mace. Check the raws if you don't believe me) if they have to, it seems. After all:

1) Most Crossbowman aren't leveled up in the Hammer skill, which is what is used to use a Crossbow, so already they have better chance to hit and do damage by shooting bolts

2) Bolts do more damage then their Crossbow's melee attacks anyway.

Likely, the AI simply chooses what it thinks it should do. I might be wrong, but its a theory anyway.

I figured demons came from the 50 or so years of inbreeding between the things, like some weird goblin evolution.
I now have justification for genocide. Thank you.

They do use it like a mace. Maces use the hammer skill.

What, are you smoking kobold bulbs? Maces use the mace skill.

It's true, even though you'd think they'd work pretty much the same way. They even have different colors. Mace users are mechanic red, while hammer users are noble purple.

As far as I know they will use the crossbow as a hammer when they run out of bolts or if none is in their possession...and if the crossbow was used like a mace it would have to be one of those hand ones, like the one in perfect dark (original). In fact if you actually think about how a crossbow looks like and operates...you'd swing it like a pick with the part that holds the string (forgotten the word) that's made out of metal while the frame and rest made out of wood... haven't heard of a solid metal crossbow yet.

Raises next question... pick uses spear? would have check the raw.

[EDIT] although I don't think the metal part would withstand enough force to cave in a skull... which then would be used as a club.

Pick, IIRC, uses Mining.

This is Dwarf Fortress, a masterly crafted game. It is adorned with bands of epic, and is studded with spikes of awesome. On the game is an image of a toad and many dwarves. The dwarves are worshipping the toad. The toad is laughing. The dwarves are dying.

Well, a crossbow usually has metal parts reinforcing the tip with the bow-thing on it. So you can clobber someone with it just fine. The reason it uses the hammer skill is somewhat trivial - the only difference between a hammer and a mace is that you can hit someone with a mace from any direction (since the mace is usually round or otherwise radially symmetric), whereas a hammer only has a maximum of 2 "usable sides". Since you don't want to hit someone with the "bow" part of the crossbow, 'cause it will break, you will use it as a hammer rather than a mace.

Hello!

Then I'll just go train me self an army of miners....cave in some skulls while I'm at it.  8)

This reminds me of incidents at my fortress just recently. I got a grizzly bear ripping apart one dwarf and then getting slain by another. When I checked, the avenger was indeed equipped with a pick and the grizzly bear had a red wound status for his heart. Needless to say that I immediately drafted the dwarf and told him to finish the job.
