[40d] Goblin cannot drown in re-filled water body.
« on: January 25, 2009, 10:22:52 am »

Situation: I drained a small lake, floodgated it, and in time, it filled back up again to full - through rain, I suppose.

A few years later, a battle happened, in which one goblin was flung in said lake.  Problem: he is not in a drowning state, despite being inside a 7/7 body of water.

Do they actually drown at all when flung into open water? I got the impression 7/7 only matters when there's a ceiling above.

If I retract a drawbridge beneath their feet and dunk them into a river, they drown just fine - even if I don't replace the drawbridge.

It still counts the bridge as a floor, I think.

You can't build a bridge, retract it, and channel under it for example.

Dump a bunch of goblins in a pool and make sure they don't drown so you can use it to execute nobles! It's like in those spy films where the hero is tied up and suspended above a tank of sharks and slowly lowered down :D

EDIT: Actually, dumping some other hostile critters with [SWIMS_INNATE] in your water moat would be cool. I'd love to fill my moat with elves.

if it doesn't drown immediately it can learn to swim.

applies to everything that doesn't already know how to swim, except stuff that dies anyway(magmamen).

My fortress is built atop a brook. The brook freezes for a couple months each winter. So one winter I dug out the area around the brook, and placed a few caged goblins in the dug out area.

Late winter comes and the brook unfreezes, flooding the area.  By spring the water is 7/7, and the goblins are caged and firmly underwater.

A year later they are still alive.   Next time the brook freezes I'm going to dig back down and link lever to their cages to try releasing them into the 7/7 water from their cages.  If they swim out I will be disappointed.

That wasn't the point. My point was, I was going to try and release them into the re-flooded area to see what happens.
