We've all run out of ways to say what we're all thinking.

what i'm thinking (wondering is more accurate, i guess) is if there will be more things that are flammable. i recently read the underground coal fire article on wikipedia, and was wondering:
what is going to happen in regards to flammability? will there be more things that are flammable/explosive? would an underground coal fire burning for years and years and years be possible? what about forest fires? will we be a token for flammable/explosive?

As I understand it, allowing walls to be melted or ignited would require significant changes to both the temperature and map generation code.

Well, on the bright side it looks like I'll be back from visiting my girlfriend by the time it comes out. Could you imagine that conversation?

How exactly does one get slapped in a good way?

When it happens in a 50s movie and you get smooched afterward.

Coal already burns for quite a while, a year or two rather than decades. Of course though, the coal seam involved in that link is bigger than whats found in DF.

AFAIK, flammability hasn't changed and theres already tags for boiling and ignite points. However, given that we can do ALOT more stuff with materials now, we will have to wait and see what the full potential is.

You made that far classier than what I was thinking.

Also, I'd love it if there were improved flammability mechanics. Currently, putting out a fire is quite annoying, and a workshop fire can take out dozens of dwarves as they foolishly run into the fire for an item, and then die 20 paces away from running around on fire instead of into the nearby brook. *sigh*

But that's the magic *cough cough dumbass AI* of Dwarf Fortress! How can you say such a thing?  :o

I'd be happy just to see candles in the game. Even without any lighting. Put all that tallow to a better use.

Okay, to fuel your fires:

Someone decided that only Dwarfs are crazy for The A-stuff.
I don't think that is the explanation for why nobody asks for it.
The reason is that it's a mythical substance,
and it would be silly to request your trade partner to come up with some.

"Oh hey, Urist, could you fetch me a winged-piano while you're at it?"

On another occasion entirely:
"Holy shit! This is Adamantium! By Armok, it does exist!"

The reason nobody asks for it, is because that would be insane,
and some probably even doubt its existence.

Why do you think the king comes when you find it?
If there were already some in the mountain-homes, he would stay there.
They probably used all of theirs,
and there are no other known sources of it found,
else the dwarfs would be sieging for it.

I've been reading through the FATAL system... and arrived at some interesting conclusions so far. While marketing a game based on FATAL would be, no doubt, "fatal" to it, (yes, the system is that awful to the common mind) it does provide some very interesting material to work with. Its concepts of racial characteristics vary greatly from what you'd expect (dwarves can polymorph into butterflies. At-will, no less.), but its underlying system makes a certain degree of sense. If you throw out all the questionable (more like outright autobannable) things, what remains is an unwieldy system unfit for tabletop roleplay, but perfectly applicable to a complex semi-simulator like DF. It has systems, tables, and formulas for relative bodypart sizes, personalities, crimes, infections, etc, etc. I haven't read through it all yet (I doubt I want to read through the magic section...), but stuff at the beginning seems to mostly fit DF's checklist.

Dare we ask why you are reading FATAL?  Then again, here we are playing dwarf fort where the demons have tentacles and corrupt intentions, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.
