In other words, the size of a z-level is a really abstract one.

Saying that its about size 7 (something like 2 meters) does help to get an idea of the scale.

I understand what he is saying as far as multi-tile critters, especially for something as complex as a dragon since the game would have to make sure that none of the creatures cubes become disconnected, for every single move it takes.

Being abstract is really the only way to make sense imo. It's for both Toady's sanity and our own

I spent a lot my middle school years reading the Redwall novels (brief summary of most of the books: semi-anthropomorphic "good" forest animals living in Redwall Abbey defend it from semi-anthropomorphic "evil" forest animals), and got to meet the author, Brian Jacques, a couple of times when he came to a local bookstore to sign books. I had noticed frequent problems in the novels with size inconsistency, so once I asked him "Exactly how big are the characters, anyway?"

With a smile and a twinkle in his eye, he said "They're as big as you imagine them to be."

Bit of a cop-out, I thought, but it's as reasonable an answer as can be expected for a situation like that, and he had enough "cheerful older relative" style charisma to make it work. :)

I've added the ability to specify in the world gen params the number of sky z-levels, the number of z-levels minimum between each layer (it'll often be more because of elevation changes), and the number of extra z-levels down at the bottom. It doesn't yet allow dynamic resizing but this should be enough for the requests I've heard about.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I love you toady. This is going to be one of the best changes in the new version. I absolutely can NOT wait for this now.

Basically, DF is so insane that, at times, it just can't handle making sense ?

If computers ever develop sentience, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Dwarf Fortress is the first one to make it.

This Z-level option is nice; I hope it handles very low Z-level counts relatively gracefully, I'd like an ultra-compressed world with eight Z-levels something like this:

Code: [Select]
Z8: The Open Sky
Z7: Mountain Peaks
Z6: Rolling Hills
Z5: Wide-Open Plains
Z4: Valleys and Beaches, Just Above Sea Level
Z3: Upper Layer Stone and Minor Gems
Z2: Deep Stone, Metals and Rare Gems
Z1: Hidden Fun Stuff

( Although actually, I would imagine that we'd end up with more interesting results if DF doesn't handle limited Z-levels gracefully.  ;D )

Toady... I, I didn't think it possible that you could make this release anymore awesome. Then you keep on springing non-note surprises on us. Burrows, awesome. More HFS style stuff, awesome. Sky's the limit no longer... :o

Sort of like the "wizard fortress" that resulted from removing all the soil layers.
