Well sometimes when people correct me on my spelling, as a joke, I pretend I was speaking about something entirely unrelated where the spelling is somehow correct.

But no one caught on.

Anyhow. So it looks like development is nice on track even with all this extra stuff being lumped ontop of it.

Spelling wasn't standardized in 16th/17th century English, so William Shakespeare the playwright wouldn't have been upset at someone spelling his name Shakespear (or Shaksper, or Sheakspir, or even Shaxberd), and probably spelled it that way himself on occasion.

Also, I fully agree that minerals should continue being called by their proper names. It is reasonable to expect that dwarves in general are experts in mineralogy, and sure, maybe they have their own names for each specific mineral, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be translated into their standard English names. I should perhaps also mention that I've learned more about mineralogy (and metallurgy, for that matter) from DF than I have from anything since an old MECC mining game on the Apple\\e in elementary school. Thanks Toady!

That being said, I could understand the less-dwarfy races just referring to stone by its color and texture ("rough grey stone," "smooth purple ore," etc.), at least until they have a Geologist position, but it would be hell for actual playability.

Also also, hi everyone!

Hello! Welcome to the forums.

A geologist position sounds good, as an appointed noble. However I always assumed that dwarven stone-knowledge was a thing they taught their kids from birth.

Perhaps the appointed Geologist for non-dwarfy races could give the sort of information that dwarflets learn as toddlers (names of stones, what they can be used for, etc.), while the appointed Geologist for a dwarf outpost could, with sufficient Geology skill, do things like predict the whereabouts of the nearest ore vein, detect underground features before the miners actually crack them open, increase the efficiency of mining and smelting, and so on.

General/Common Knowledge/Education system?

I am not against it as long as it doesn't become silly.

Human parents tell their little humans bedtime stories. Dwarf parents read aloud from the geology textbook. :-)

And there is the slide :D

Though more specifically the more, for lack of a better word, advanced a civilisation becomes the more generalised the common knowledge becomes.

With respect to Kobolds almost every member should be an expert in survival.

Though should it be enforced or possibly create a system where they learn things based on their survival and interests?

Yes, but only because the ones who aren't experts in survival are all dead. Natural selection!

Natural selection indeed but no the way your implying.

Though what that also means is that you get less variation in skills in the Kobolds as opposed to Human or Dwarven society. (Goblin and Elf are hard to pin down)

Though it isn't the Industrial Age so we arn't at the age of the specialists just yet :P

I like the technical terminology for minerals . . . to me, it's these sorts of touches that help me suspend disbelief and enjoy the game as much as I do.

The Technical terminology at least made sense to me.

In that common stone would get common names

Uncommon stone (or stone hard to get or unimportant) would probably get these technical names due to the fact that they would probably only be named by philosopher/scientists/observers

On the subject of stone naming, I prefer the scientific/current approach; it gets me interested in the geology when I can look up the real rocks online and learn more about them rather than generalizing it as "gray rock" as a fantasy-type system might, geologer positions nonwithstanding.

In other words, it makes me feel more dwarfy.

Mini-request: is it possible to quickfix coins into being smaller and lighter than they are now, thus stifling the problem of dorfs needing ever more boxes to store the coins in?  Sounds silly but it's been eating at me for months now!  :(

The best solution is to not make coins.  The economy runs fine without them, and they'll always be a disaster until restacking is implemented.

That being said, I could understand the less-dwarfy races just referring to stone by its color and texture ("rough grey stone," "smooth purple ore," etc.), at least until they have a Geologist position, but it would be hell for actual playability.

Yeah, that's more what I had in mind than the dwarves themselves.

DF probably isn't as accurate as a game designed to be educational might be, though...  Toady was a mathematician, not a geologist.

I wonder if ten years from now geology professors are going to have to "un-teach" errors that all their students learned from DF...
