I never thought I would be desperately hoping elves show up with a lot of goods. With being unable to trade the meals away last autumn, some of them have started to rot, and we've had to throw them away.
-
I've noticed a lot of dwarves standing around doing nothing today. Even those ignoring the party that's going on in the dining hall. So I went ahead and drew up work orders to add more fishing and farm work for several lazy dwarves. I'm letting the party go for now, no reason to stop it right this moment, until the hoped for elves arrive(not at all just because I'm enjoying it).
-
...
OK THAT'S IT. All military dwarves are on duty, and the guard is relieved. I'm tired of this foolishness. The speardwarf will be buried, and if I hear of any more military deaths without seeing at least an angry rabid groundhog, I'm going to start entombing corpses in glass and letting them rot to bones before closing up the tomb.
Endok will be missed, he leaves behind a wife and child. And several friends.
-
The Elves are here, finally, ordered ALL of our meals to the trade depot. These elves are going to be very happy. I hope they at least brought some lumber. Finally time to trade for some wood... right after this plump helmet.
-
Ten times what their items are worth. That better bring some more next season. A handful of logs, a barrel of strawberry wine, an empty barrel, several bins of cloth, and even a wooden scepter was the haul, maybe one of the kids would enjoy playing bash the monkey with the scepter. Should be amusing.

Joy, more goblins. Luckily for us, most of them were away from the walls, and the one bowman they did bring with them, was the one trying to lead the others into the wall, and ran into an axe dwarf at the door, with the remaining speardwarf not far away, and the crossbows ready up above. This should be over quickly.
HA! Did I say crossbows, nah no crossbows. They were on the other side of the wall at the time, and within seconds of spotting them we had goblin-ka-bobs, so they didn't even manage to get over the wall. The spear dwarf went into a trance, and killed three wrestlers and is gleefully skipping behind the last one with a spear raised.
I'm not even sure what happened to the bowgoblin. I think there's an arm over there, strangely enough still wearing bone rings, bone amulets, and clutching a bone crown. Odd, maybe we slaughtered some goblin royalty. I almost feel like we made a mistake... almost.

After the fighting, I went to talk to the speardwarf about his heroic defense, and found him in a corner of the wall, complimenting one of his spears on 'her stabbyness'.
I decided instead to ask Neo about the dwarf.
Apparently his name is Shikon to his friends, a former ballista operator and designer who has taken his love for ballista bolts to the next level. Of holding them in his bare hands and poking things with them.
He has named each of the two spears he holds in either hand. The copper spear is name Zat, dwarfish for stab, and the maple spear is named Rashda'k, or Death Tree. And apparently Zat is male, and in love with Rash who is female, but Rash is too cool and collected to talk to him, and has a crush on Shikon and...
my god...
This is far too interesting, its beginning to wear me down, I almost asked if Shikon had a crush on someone other than the spears... It's about this time I noticed he was wearing a dress.
...
ANYWAY, as long as the dwarf keeps on protecting the fortress so well, I will be happy to listen to his stories... maybe after I count all the plump helmets we have... again.
After his final kill in this ambush, I have awarded him the title of 'The Laborious Confines' It's a traditional name for spear heroes. Lets hope he can live up to it.

As we were hauling in the loot from Shikon's stab-fest, another group of goblins thought they could sneak in from the other side. This time four goblin pikeman, a wrestler, and another bowgoblin leading the charge stupidly. I say stupidly, as our marksdwarves are just waiting for targets above them.
Not to mention the stationed melee dwarves just inside the wall. Bromrek, Lorbam, and another axedwarf rushed to battle with the dogs chained to stop thieves. Goblin blood ran freely. The last spear goblin nearly bounced off Bromrek's shield, and landed several yards south of the wall.

I hope our traders like narrow crap. We seem to be up to our beards in the stuff.
I've also noticed we have a bit of cloth laying around. I've given the order to build a craftsdwarf workshop in the cloth pit, we can start making some crafts to sell out of all that, and maybe reuse some of the bins.
-
Today my friend Olon has grown to a full working age. He is currently a peasant, but I've given him the job of taking care of animals, as well as letting him handle some of the cloth craft making duties. The Lad's father is as proud as can be, and even took some time away from patrolling with his axe, to congratulate his son.
-
A snatcher managed to sneak inside the walls today. He was found by three dogs, Neo, Bromrek, and an axe dwarf. Wanna guess what happened?
Did you guess, separated from head and launched across courtyard? If so, you get a cookie. This is really becoming entertaining. Wish we had some stone for mechanisms to make cage traps, we could sell tickets. In exchange for charcoal.

Oh Amok... I'm about ready to find myself a spear and join Shikon in talking to it.
Today brought no end of trouble to our fort. Migrants arrived, and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, at their head was a silk clad Dungeon Master, wearing bright pink mittens.
Not only do we have no place to put him, apparently he is fond of SILVER, GOLD, PLATINUM, ELECTRUM and a bunch of expensive gemstones. Maybe we can somehow feed him to the elephants. Hmm, wish we still had that cougar the elves brought us. I hear his name is Asmel, and he is the precursor to more nobility 'joining' us.
I've ordered Hexed to expand the old barracks, we can use that as a noble pit to fill with them, and there are doors there that we can lock as well...
-
On the bright side, as I was watching the stream of seemingly endless migrants trudge through the murk to the fortress, one of the elephants found a master thief lurking in the bushes.
The thief promptly tried to run, scattering the line of migrants and finding only a military axe to the face.
-
Ugh, this game of chase the elephant is starting to become less entertaining. Two elephants managed to run off with axes stuck in various organs today. One in the neck, the other in it's liver. I want to know which one of our axedwarves thought they'd try and behead an elephant...
One of our new migrants is a ranger, I've told him to go try his hand at shooting elephants.
-
Meanwhile, I've told the glass production crew to burn some of our limited wood, and start work on making some glass furniture for the noble pit.
I've also given one of the marksdwarves a title for his repeated prowess with a crossbow. 'The gloved power of sloths' ... Well I liked it anyway.
-
Today Bobby got in on the goblin killing business. Cog, our new hunter was out chasing an elephant while bobby was trying to cut some trees nearby when a snatcher popped up. Bobby didn't really change much from his axe swinging, just turned and chopped, sending the goblin flying.
-
The new noble chambers had a visitor today. Either the elephant wanted to say hello to our new dungeon master, or he didn't like the way the new pit looked. Either way, I've locked the animal in with the noble, we shall all gather around the window and see who comes out alive. As I'm not unlocking the doors until one or the other is dead.
Unfortunately I failed to notice that the elephant had crossbow bolts sticking out of it's neck and liver. It died shortly after we gathered around the window.

The calendar says it's summer now. And I need to think about what projects I will do while we wait and hope for a large wood shipment from the dwarves in fall. I think the first will be to expand our dining hall, and move the plump helmet farm to the third level with the other farm plots. As things are getting a little crowded.
After that I think we may need to do something about the main stockpile. It's overflowing with goblin gear. Maybe we can somehow pave the road with goblin clothing. That might not be such a bad idea... I will have to think on it.
We are up to a little over eighty dwarves now, and nearly as many animals running around. We've imported more than we've created, and have a fair amount of food on hand, enough that I'm not worried at all of any of us starving to death. Drinks are still limited, as we get more dwarves the drinks need to be brewed more often, and we are still limited on barrels to use. With this summer starting, we will see if our challenge to the humans about the milk will produce any barrels.
Also of note, is that our new hunter managed to kill one elephant, before he was injured and forced to rest in bed. Hunters really do have a bad trend of doing that here.
