scrolling, across the map
« on: January 08, 2009, 02:04:17 am »

Sometimes, the set rate at which Dwarf Fort scrolls across the map is just too much or too little.

what if scrolling accellerated the view?(repeatedly pressing an arrowkey)
the more times you press it, the farther it shifts left or right with each press.
(like 5 tiles right, then 6 the next time you press it, then 8, then 12, 20, 32, ect)

also, if you shift the opposite way, its one half the effect, and returns slowly to 5 while stationary.

This would make it easier to search the map

I agree that the scroll rate can be horribly sluggish, but a simple compounding scroll could get pretty aggravating.

Maybe a three speed scroll, like arrow = normal, shift + arrow = fast, ctrl + shift + arrow = compounding?

This thread has confused me slightly. As far as I am aware, pressing shift + arrow key already does scroll you at double the normal rate (In fact, I just leapt into DF to verify this).
Go on, go and try it now!

the current far-scroll method works fine, but not great.

if scrolling far starts with 5 tiles and accellerates with each press up to an entire screen, its like having the ability to move 5 map tiles, and the width of the screen both in a single button!

also, my laptop lacks a numberpad, making it difficult to scroll the map properly.
i've given upplaying dwarf fort at college.

So if you want to scan the area by leaps of 10 or whatever.. you have to press the button enough times, then press some other button, then start the process over, so you aren't suddenly being shot 22 squares past where you wanted to see?

Bad idea, imo.

do you really imagine its worse than flying an agonizing 5 squares over at a time?
you'd be suprised how much more you'll like it when your doing anything that doesn't neatly fit 5*5 sections.

screen width tops man.

Get a USB ten-key pad.  They're like $10, but are worth their weight in gold for DF and/or Nethack.

I've got a laptop with no 10-key, but i don't have trouble. Sure, having to hold "Fn" is a little anoying, but totally do-able. If you get a USB 10-key, you can't use the laptop while it's in your lap.
:) just my 2 dwarf-bucks

speaking of key functions, do you think toady will change key sensing anytime soon?

if the symbol keys could hold more bindings, that would help alot
(shift-0, shift-;, ect)

I just set mine on the couch/bus seat/train seat/whatever next to my leg.  Though I haven't tried using it for DF..

I find the 10-key is particularly good if you have it on its side (like you're shaking its hand).  It's just a little bit more ergonomically comfortable than if your forearm is pronated.
