I remember that it's often recommended to only train weapon skill up to when the min delay is reached (by example the "greatsword of the stork" i carry has it reached at skill 18) for them as apparently the disminishing return does not make it worthwhile to continue train them.

But while the skill level is known for specific weapon , i never know when it become useless to train strength and switch to dexterity for my melee characters, as i guess the disminishing return strikes hard there too. So is there some value that makes you stop increasing strength and focus to dexterity ?

I think the rule of thumb is basically never strength unless you plan to wear plate armor or heavier.

at least i got it required as my berserker has been aiming for armor and has been wearing plate for a while before finally switching to a recently found dragon hide enchanted into a pearl dragon armour.
Too bad i had already put so much in strength as the pearl armour gives the same benefit as the plate for a much lesser encumbrement, but who can guess you'll find one of those rare pearl dragon hide.

When I played MiFi a lot, I put everything into dexterity because the base strength is so high (~20 at the beginning iirc). YMMV with weaker classes, though.

Found these interesting "dodging penalty" charts about strength vs penalty depending on various encumbrement for a set armor skill :

it's from 2014 no idea if those numbers are still valid for current and trunk. But looks like i indeed put too much in strength considering what i have :/

edit :

just ran into the Swamp rune, after annihilating an impressive amount of hydras and swamp dragons, thanks my brother in arms that saved me from trouble at a specific point ... obviously those damned thorn hunters , still as strong as i remember and hit harder than absolutely anything i faced so far, many headed hydra and dragons included, couldn't believe how fast health was going down when i faced one.
I don't want to imagine a low HP character getting hit by those ranged 3d18 damage a couple of time



my character so far seems to be doing good, out of those stupidly strong thorn hunters (at least they die to fire slightly quickly) , i never went close to death yet
But can't believe i only found 1 ring, and no amulet up to now, good that berserker are very strong as a class and can survive on their own nicely.

stupid, stupid, stupid YASD

My character was on the bottom of Snake Pit, basically unstoppable at that point (by naga troops i mean), i had already killed a big bunch of naga on that floor.
Then i recieve a Trog gift, and looking at it, it seemed rather interesting as i had nothing in term of MR since the beginning of the game

the +3 arbalest "Opies" {venom, +Fly rN++ MR++}Out of the Venom brand being probably not good on naga, i still decided to give it a try to see if it would do more damage than what i had as i had reached 10 in crossbows and  i had so much bolts to spare as Trog already gave me hundred of bolts in lots of gifts.

And to my surprise it did, killed 2 more nagas with it.

Ok that was fun to deal the naga their own poison, but time to go back at my proved buckler (i had very good shield skill at that point) and +4 scimitar of freezing combo that did wonders on that floor at blocking the insane amount of arrows the naga are shooting while i reach corridors to wait for meleeing them.

But it does wonders when you don't FORGET to re-equip the damned shield.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few days ago, except mine involved Sniper and a Large Shield of Reflection on an endgame character. ;_;

Must hurt, the only consolation i had was that it wasn't yet endgame ready, "only" the 2nd rune.
But damn, i'm sure that guy was really endgame potential.

Aaah! Died again because of my recklessness. It seems like I just reject learning how to play DCSS (or more generally, a roguelike)... How many more characters will have to die before I learn not to act desperately and not to panic when I find my character in perplexing circumstances with apparent signs of distress? I just too often forget that DCSS is a damn turn-based game, where no one forces me to do something right now...

That's the yasd story of the heavy majority of my characters, nearly all of them had to do with me basically acting on urgency as if crawl was real time, completely forgetting it's turn based and so instead of just waiting and browsing my items/ability/spells to use one that could have make the guy survive or at least give it a chance to survive their problem, i just react in reflex.

that and forgetting to re-equip shields when facing waves of ranged units :D

Though not as hilarious as me side-stepping around as if it was going to help me dodge incoming shots, a problem i had after having played a lot of DoomRL at some point.

Aaah! Died again because of my recklessness. It seems like I just reject learning how to play DCSS (or more generally, a roguelike)... How many more characters will have to die before I learn not to act desperately and not to panic when I find my character in perplexing circumstances with apparent signs of distress? I just too often forget that DCSS is a damn turn-based game, where no one forces me to do something right now...
I wouldn't worry about it too much, I floundered around in the first few levels of dungeon for like literally a year before something clicked and my characters started to get further.

I tried to register for their forums but they require an email and mailinator wasn't receiving the activation email even when I game them alternate email account names.



Also, I ended up with no internet for the last ~6 days, so I played a lot of Crawl. I tried a few different builds:
-Merfolk Skald: I can't quite figure this one out - I'm always too weak in melee to make it past the beginning of Lair even with a Spectral Weapon spear and all buffs active

-Demigod Fighter: Mostly a test for how well I do on a godless run. I died mid-Lair iirc.

-Deep Dwarf Fighter: I got all the way to the Depths with this. I used to have a lot more trouble with not losing HP, but I've learned to limit the number of enemies attacking me at once. In the end, though I got a few too many powerful enemies around me for constant healing potions/staves to save me.

-Demonspawn Fighter: Good for Sprint, and also good for the main game. My 15-rune + 1 zig win with it:

I got really lucky, through. An overview of my game:
-Found Autumn Katana in the early Dungeon; however, it didn't become my endgame weapon
-Got gifted Wyrmbane (!) on Lair:6. Once I had my basic skills trained up, I switched over to Polearms just to use it - except for a few extremely unlikely randarts, it's the best weapon in the game
-Until the Zig at the end, I had lots of extra healing potions because of the heal-on-kill mutation.
-I tried to switch to TSO before Tomb, but demonspawns are evil :P. So I stayed with Oka.
-Near the end of Pan, I had all the melee skills where I wanted them, so I branched out into Necromancy. As it turns out, raising zombies and creating ghosts out of enemies clear some of the denser zig levels extremely well. Control Undead also helped cause some chaos on Tomb/undead-themed levels, but not quite enough - I had to skip one or two of them in the later Zig to avoid an annoying death. The constant flaying + smite-targeted damage was too much to deal with.
-I tried to Apport the Orb of Zot across Zot:5. I realized that this no longer skips one floor of the orb run when I had to kill a Pan lord.

DsFi is god. Especially since you got two of the best mutation paths[Torment Resistance & Regen]. I would have gotten Borgnjor's instead of Necromutation, since you're already quite robust against Torment, but otherwise it looks solid. I'd also have switched gods, probably to Kiku[More torment resist + undead minions] or Ash[Divination + Clar]. Still, congrats on finishing a ziggurat~! I rarely play enough to get a char capable of clearing one and when I do, I always chicken out before trying for one.

I stayed away from Borgnjor's because of the permanent HP drain, but I might take a look at it sometime. I'll also keep the advice about which god to switch to in mind - at the time, I had no idea what to pick.
