Alas, my dwarven necromancer met her end on Vault 8, not by the vault guards, oh no, but rather swarmed by a Lich, three dragons, and five stone giants. This being after I managed to kill off Mara. :(

Damn I wish I was better at this game, I always (without fail) die by the mid game (D10, Orc 2/3, Lair 2/3). Normally simply because I'm a cocky idiot or just generally stopped paying attention. Best run was with a Vampire Assassin who got lucky with scrolls of acquirement until he met his end to a horde of ice beasts. What a muppet.

Oh hubris, how I hate thee. What was I thinking when I decided to take on an ice fiend and three ice devils when I had no cold resistance whatsoever? Sad thing is, I killed all but one ice devil with my trusty wand of fire, and then it killed me. If I had survived just that turn, I would've killed him too :'(

Here is a very promising KoBe I parked jus in front of Lair. I think I'll do that and then Orc(which is on the same D:level). The dilemma I have is ring selection. I have one awesome randart ring that lets me blink and become invisible. Together with teleport control i have a semi-reliable escape mechanizm after berserking. A ring of Dex + 4 is better overall protection and I wear that instead of T. Control.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Any hints or tips before I go on? So I don't waste such a very promising character. I could try and get some more Dlevels clear before entering Lair. Also the epic crossbow Trog just gave me tempts me to start traing that skill. Although it might be futile.

The biggest element of skill in Dungeon Crawl is actually probably self appraisal.  That is, knowing what you can do, and what you can't do.  Being able to say "Yeah, I can't kill that unique yet.  I'll skip it".

D:4 continues to be insane:

First:
Sigmund
Blork
2 Ogres

Then:
Sigmund
Iyub
Pikel

Then:
Sigmund
3(!) Ogres.
ORCS EVERYWHERE.

Then:
Blork
5(!!) Ogres.

I've been able to get past it and deeper into the dungeon, but god damn it Crawl. The last one was nice, finding an altar to Vehumet right as I entered D:2.

Except those times when "I'll skip it" isn't possible.1 Those times are sad :-\

Agreed, though, knowing when to ditch is close to the most important part of Crawl.

1Hey Nessos! Oh, you're hasted. And faster than me before that. And blinking toward me spewing flaming poison-y death. Ahahahahahaha. What? Scrolls? Oh, you just burnt them all. /dies

Ogre doomsday levels are actually good with some characters (specifically, characters with mephitic cloud/ ensorcelled hibernation/ sticky flame).  Lots of xp.

Also, mephitic cloud has been ridiculous for me this game.  First I get Dowan to one shot himself with an elven dagger of electrocution (which I then stole, of course) while confusing Duvessa, and thus making her berserk useless.  Then I went to a flagged portal (the one where the map looks like the Star of David) and drowned 3 orc warriors, then incinerated 2 more and an orc knight.  Now I just throw a mephitic cloud at the entrance to what seems to be a room to guard the entrance to the orcish mines (I saw warriors and priests in there) with no visible water or lava and...  I've already got 6 kill messages.  While hiding somewhere else.  From a single cast of a level 3 spell.

My level 12 BSTr (Beserker Troll) ended up taking upon 110 Orc Warriors/Priests/Wizards at the Orc fort I believe. As far as I am aware, its the only place that spawns a crap load of orc's.

Troll Berserker is TrBe, I think.

Incidentally, I had a great time against Nessos.  I used Deflect Missiles to totally nullify most of his attacks, then confused him.  Then I ran into a problem - my only attack spell was still Shock.  I NEED A NEW ONE DAMNIT.  Oh well, got him after a whole MP bar and some wands.

So in Trunk you can now destroy books to forget one of the spells in the book. Sounds good to me.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
