I believe the spell you're referring to is fulminant prism.  It summons a little... prism thingy, then 2 or 3 turns later it explodes in a 5x5 kaboom.  If it's destroyed earlier it has a weaker explosion, with no explosion at all if destroyed early enough.

Not a good spell to find on a ghost, but you can get them to blow themselves and any number of other things up with it.  So it's kind of a mixed blessing sometimes.

What got nerfed about it?

I might be talking out of my ass, since I can't be bothered to re-check, but y'all should be used by now :D

- Demonspawn mutation Powered by Death got hit specifically to make multi-zigging a bit more difficult
- High-level books don't spawn in the earlier levels, making it harder to find Statueform
- Spawn rates are constantly adjusted and filler enemies are removed; also each branch has dangerous fast/elemental enemies making a chei follower without statueform a lot harder to get going
- Monk starting class got hit and the starting melee skill is lower.

Don't get me wrong, DsMo^Chei was by no means over-nerfed, but it's harder than it was, and the game has gotten harder due to the devs removing "filler" enemies and shortening branches.

In other news, second rune Tomb, with Cekugob (-tele) for rN, because what are the mummies gonna do about it? Will post a char dump after I get Vaults and a Zig down.

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.
"Hear me, exalted spirits. Hear me be you gods or devils, ye who hold dominion here. I am a wizard without a home. I am a wanderer seeking refuge."

Okay yeah, that must be it. Had no idea how to react at the time. Now I'll be smarter about it. Was wondering if people are trying to optimize best character killer ghosts for tournament points.

Zig dided - game seems rather determined to not give me resists on items that don't get absorbed by my chiseled stone abs, so I need to either wear an amulet of rage to bring me to rF++ rC++ rN++ and forfeit my sweet amulet of Regen/Slaying, or swap my ring of Robustness for that rF++ rC- one. I've also forgotten a bunch of stuff exists (rMut, Clarity, Stasis, etc) and I was like "why do I have so few potions of cure mutation I am so borked".

Nevertheless, behold:

I find myself increasingly prefering heavily geared, obscenely powerful characters to weaker characters which require actual good play to even get a rune. I suspect this means it's time to lay off Crawl for a while and go play an actual hack'n'slash.

The more difficult they make it, the narrower their target audience. It's barely playable for me in 0.17 as it is.

I guess the target audience is the existing DCSS experts by now, explaining some of the changes toward making the game much harder in every branches.

My problem with new Crawl versions, they bring very cool new features i appreciate, but in the same version they bring things, that for my taste, are frankly bad and ultimately always lead me to simply stop playing for months until i try a new version a few months later and repeat the same process again.

Fortunately for me DCSS isn't the only RL i play and enjoyed so if the game direction goes toward  something i don't like, it's not that much of a problem, and i can still try to play an older version from before some of the stuff that started to repel me.

My problem is that it seems to be that they've taken away a lot of the 'quirkier' play options. There seems to be this overpowering need to balance absolutely everything, and it's just not needed in a single-player RL. I know there's the tourny and whatever, but it's getting to the point that all classes/races are getting to be a bit too similar.

I know it's a common complaint, and it's not that it's anything new - but I've been feeling it more and more in recent updates.

I also feel the development conversation space is totally dominated by a few influential people, and they manage to enforce their viewpoint pretty well, to the point of derailing threads talking about stuff that deviates from that viewpoint.  Those few allowable opinions (stated as facts, naturally) bounce around the echo chamber enough to convince people that they must be true.

Discovered recently that someone coding-capable had been taking on himself to fork DCSS and re-implement the removed features he liked.
That's interesting to test if you miss a removed feature but like some of the ones the devs added in the same time.
"DCSS Extra Hearthy Edition"
https://github.com/tmhedberg/dcss-ehe

But unfortunately as it often happens to forks, the project is probably abandonned , not having seen updates in 3 years.

That said, i was curious and looked around if there were more fork of DCSS that i never heard about , and there was :
DCSS Circus Animal Variation
https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19227
https://github.com/jeremygurr/dcssca
Seems more updated as the last one was "only" 4 months ago

Hellcrawl
https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=21527
https://github.com/Hellmonk/hellcrawl
last updated 2 months ago

There's too the one i talked about somewhere in that thread, Crawl Light
https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5602
https://github.com/dtsund/crawl-light
that seems as abandonned as the "hearty" fork as the last update was 3 years ago

I believe hellcrawl is being actively developed, however while it does add some nice things (Damage numbers shown!  No more food! YAY!) its main purpose is paring down the dungeon, making less XP available and generally making the game harder.

Circus animals fork was kinda similar, but less wide in scope I believe.  It did have some weird mechanics intended to stop luring and stairdancing as well.

Crawl light has light in its name, so its obviously for filthy casuals :P

So something I've wondered about for a while and I'm wondering if I've got right--

According to the wiki, trolls do unarmed damage of 9, plus their innate Claws 3 mutation, which means they should be doing 15(+UC+regular modifiers). Blade Hands does 8+(STR+DEX)/3, which means that you need a minimum of 21 str+dex to break even, right? Or does that 9 damage for being a troll include Claws 3? On top of that, you've got the offhand which'll do +2d3 vs +6 (a flat improvement, in this case.)

Alternatively, you've got Beastly Appendage, which you can ~6 damage out of on average, plus the chance of a stun, or 9 damage from talons.

I'm guessing that the troll UC includes Claws 3. Plus, I cast aspersions on those Bland Hands damage formulas. Str/Dex weighting was removed a version or two ago.

The headbutt stun has been gone for a while, I know that.
I could have sword I'd seen fairly knowledgable people say that blade hands outdamages claws 3, but then, how often do you really get to try them side by side?

I do question whether blade hands has any damage contribution from dex anymore, I thought all that was gone, even from the weird UC formulas.

I've been messing about with troll transmuters; they're pretty easy to get up to blade hands, and, while I can get my stats high enough to cast statueform, I haven't found a spellbook for it yet. -_-

Their stats seem pretty good for it too; unless I'm mistaken, statueform benefits from UC and dodging, both reasonable things for trolls to be training. Chei will take care of the low int problems, low spellcasting is fine since trolls and hunger isn't really a thing, there's a healthy HP pool and even if you're out of MP, you'll still have high combat potential.

In this case, bladehands is more just a case of 'Do I bother casting this, or just go barehanded?' Having said that, even if there's a slight increase in damage, I'm not sure it's worth the trade off of spell casting penalty and tactical detriment of inability to use wands.

Ahaha, my DEFE got SF online by D:3. Also on D:3 was the watery dart slug downstairs "ambush", which resulted in a maniacal rampage and steam EVERYWHERE. Then Robin and her gang came around, and I did it again, except this time with flame clouds. FUCKING AWESOME. (I listened to My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light 'Em Up), one of the shorter-named songs by Fall Out Boy, as I killed everybody. I'm on fiiiiiire!)
