I'd recommend Symphogear instead of those then. no harem protag or any nonsense, no ecchi to speak of. The show has cute girls etc, but they clearly decided they weren't having any of that shit where there are bath scenes, beach episodes or they grope each others boobs etc. The show has none of anything like that.

This video sums up what Symphogear is like:

Madoka: come for magical girls, stay for interesting monsters, get 2 hours of whimpering schoolgirls. That's basically what they do for latter half: whimpering and whimpering and whimpering and realizing they can just wish away all witches and whimpering and whimpering. It's okay. Wonder (but not enough to read wikipedia, of course  :P ) if they did put more focus on fights in show's mild siquelitis. It's what sequelitis is for, isn't it? No, not going to watch it.  :P

On unrelated note, i'm surprised by Death Note being most watched anime by animelist (link from movie thread). Even more surprised by Noragami neing 17th. What's even special about it? Amused by SAO. Not in the least surprised that all things on the list i know except Death Note and Toradora are freak fight films. And i watched none of that 50.  :P Did read first few chapters of Noragami and was unimpressed.

I think Death Note is so up there because it hooks a wide range of people.

And by "wide range of people" i just mean "girls as well". Which explains a few other seeming "outliers" too, probably including Noragami in that.

It's as simple as that. I mean, something like Naruto, exactly how many women watch that? That's 50% of the potential audience right there. In Death Note you have two skinny pasty dudes competing. That's basically 80% of the appeal of something like Twilight right there.

EDIT: had a look at the Noragami reviews since I don't think they have gender breakdown stats for viewers. The reviews were almost 50/50 male/female split, if you count the few people who didn't put a gender down on their profile as being more likely to be women, and the two reviews I can find on there that gave it 10/10 were both written by women. Noragami is on a list of notable manga written by women too. So, pretty much explains the whole deal right there: it's something that just happens to appeal to both men and women so it instantly gets a viewer boost compared to things which are more targeted.

Death note is also genuinely good. Though I wouldn't put it in my top 10, it's still near the top of the bell curve. It's one of the few anime out there that isn't some cutesy moe crap.

Also, the actual Death Note notebook is iconic as fuck. I'm constantly seeing people in youtube comments fantasize about what they would do if they had their hands on that book, even in videos that have nothing to do with anime. Honestly, I think it's all that discussion about that book that leads people to checking out the anime since people want to know what everyone is talking about.

I recently finished watching the first season of Plunderer.

Show starts off looking like a very typical shonen anime, set in a fantasy world filled with mysterious objects that each grant their bearer some unique power; and of course the people with these objects are all wandering around the countryside until they encounter eachother and have a big flashy fight with oddly specific rules enforced by a mysterious power. I'm pretty sure I've heard this one before.

Fortunately, the plot fairly quickly starts taking some unexpected turns, with some unusual third parties joining the fray and an origins arc that explains much of the mysterious, while still leaving a bit unexplained to keep us watching. There's an overarching theme of people who don't want to kill, but happen to be trapped in circumstances which leave them no choice. Still nothing super original, but at least it's a diverse mix of more unusual and dramatic elements to keep things interesting.

Moderate fanservice, but it keeps things PG-13.

Overall, I can't say it's a must-watch, but definitely a decent time-killer if there's nothing else on your radar. Second season expected early next year.

In subbing news, Horriblesubs has finally decided to close down. That's really the end of an era there.

Bummer. I'm sure someone else will pop up, but better or worse, who can say? But probably worse at first, quality of releases relies a lot on the knowledge and experience of the people doing it.

Damn shame, I'll miss the super neat organization of things they had on their site, made finding and getting shows in a proper order a breeze. I kinda gave this season a break partway as well (tho I was only really following Re:Zero kinda loosely) so coming back to find a nuked site was a double whammy since I have like half a season and now have to hunt down the rest of it somewhere else.

Nyaa is ok I guess, but navigating and searching for things is annoying with the sheer amount of shit they have there.

shanaproject.com

Not sure what you're showing us here, these look like by various different subbers so they're not "doing things" at all just hosting; if they have their own subs I don't see them on the site. I think the interface is more opaque than nyaa since they aren't really using colors and they've divided things in ways that make it pop less. Seems like it's just a RSS manager for when you know exactly what you want already. I don't even see ways to add search filters, for example to only show the highest resolution available, which should be very possible given the way they appear to have organized their data. I also see no file type indication whatsoever. If you already know exactly what file you want and you're familiar with the subber and how they do things, that's not hard on nyaa either.

EDITed for clarity. I don't get your points here.

The "doing things" quote was in relation to erai-raws vs Horriblesubs. I said erai-raws is doing things similar to how HS did them (simulcast rips not subbing). That's entirely unrelated to shanaproject.

They don't need color coding. On nyaa, all Eng anime is purple. Shanaproject is only Eng anime, so everything here would come under the purple filter. Hence, it doesn't need to be color-coded unless you're asking for them to use color-coding at a higher level of granularity than nyaa does.

Quote

Not really. It's all Eng releases of airing shows by major groups. You don't need to know what groups exist or what shows are airing to use this, you just need to speak English and want to watch current shows. Quickly browsing the list informs you about what shows are out this season, then you can just pick a release to follow. Most of the time, i just browse this then once I know what's actually being released I cross-reference the shows with season charts to see which ones I like the look of. At least this way you know that the shows you're considering watching are actually out, rather than having to go through season charts then discovering hardly any of it's out yet.

This is slightly contradictory. you really do need to know exactly what you want before even venturing into nyaa. You really don't for shanaproject.

Quote

It's not a useful idea. Shana is only for currently airing English subbed anime after all, it's already plenty filtered as a result, and it's hard to actually come up with filters that would do anything other than for sub group or title. It's as complicated as it needs to be. Considering that many releases will be in 3 quality choices and the search gives 50 things per page, searching by title or sub group alone give the last 17 relevant releases. This is plenty to work out what's out, and the options for who's releasing it, and since you only need to tag a single episode to follow the whole thing, you really don't need to manually track down all the prev episodes the way you do on nyaa.

Quote
I also see no file type indication whatsoever.
click the + button to the left, and additional information is listed. I even mentioned that button in my post. Note however, that nyaa lacks any sort of indication of file type in their main search listings, so if that's something you care about, shanaproject actually wins on that point.

Not that anyone cares about it at this point, but nonetheless I feel I must rant about it for a moment.

Re:Zero (S1) so far is pretty good about the character drama.

The dialogue is simple and childish, not merely lacking subtlety but hitting you in the face with a sledgehammer. But whatever, that's normal for anime I guess.

The politicking is just absolutely... I don't even have a word for it. It just doesn't make any sense. The very important royal selection process has zero ceremony to it? That old guy (presumably a minor noble) can just... speak up in the middle of it? A fucking giant interrupts everything to try to kidnap one of the candidates (even if the candidate said he should not be killed for it), and he is simply... politely asked to leave? Not order the guards to escort him out (i.e. not leave it up to him)? What about later: Karsten is a major economic leader and one of the royal candidates, has an entire estate in the city, but zero staff? Hoshin can just walk right up to the room without Karsten being told that she has arrived to visit? How does Karsten and Hoshin not immediately call out Subaru for not having any authority to negotiate in the name of Roswell/Emilia, whether for economic rights in their region let alone an "alliance" between the houses?

Are these scenes as brutally simple in the source material too?
