Kyon has a role but to my knowledge he isn't the redeemer so much as he is sort of the character who solves everyone's personal arcs.

It isn't EXACTLY what I meant by redeemer... though I guess the word itself applies to Kyon... but not what I was going with it.

Caring and nice are two separate things.

And Kyon isn't always the main character. He switches from being the main character to being the perspective character depending on the episode (It is an anime with two main characters woo!)

So before they fought and they were like
"This kid is a vampire! Cross coffin blah blah!"
and Touta got his ass handed to him, I was like, "Pfft, maybe, but he's not just any vampire, he's the scion of the Dark Evangel, who was known to be a hax!vampire in that her range of ability was stupid and no one could actually do anything to her, and only the guy who possibly manipulated her feelings was the one to beat her in any capacity."
And then from that thought I was like, "Oh shit! What if he inherited Magia Erebea, too!? Actually, I wonder how relevant that is, because Eva never really (visibly) used it and IIRC it got glossed over after Negi managed to handle it, so I guess that'll come later. That's a shame, because I thought it was super cool."
Like maybe 15 pages later:
"HOLY SHIT NO WAY I TOTALLY CALLED IT! Well not the it not being relevant and it'll come later part, because apparently it's the fucking center of the plot, BUT I TOTALLY CALLED IT!"

Also, I don't understand why they aren't shitting themselves. They know only 2 people have used Magia Erebea, both of them are classified as "Do Not Ever Fuck With", and one of them learned it from the other. Even if the kid is new and inexperienced, the point is they must not know that Eva invented Magia Erebea or they're guessing someone else developed it independently, otherwise they'd be like "AAAHHHHH THE DARK EVANGEL IS NEAR, BAIL OUT, BAIL OUT!!"
Maybe this whole thing is just to bait her out.

I see it more as these guys being experienced in the business of fighting immortal douchebags.  They may have faced off against and survived some crazy shit in their life and have already accepted the fact that in this line of business, they can die.  Obviously, they also got some aces up their sleeves to deal with immortals, as the old sword guy has shown.
They or at least the old sword guy seems to also be a professional mercenary.  Does his job as far as needed, willing to do more if offered more.  He knows what he is capable of.

He is going to lose anyways, cause hax plot... or at the least comes out to a shitty draw.
