you watching the dub or the sub of gurren lagann?

Dub because I'm with someone who doesn't favor subs much.

I skipped episode 16 'cause.

Episode 17....is heh, different.

Once you start getting used to sub, you can tell how horrible the voice acting is on dubs.....I think it would be better for everyone if they just hired homeless families. The voices couldn't get any worse and at least they would have children playing children instead of 30 year old guys with squeaky voices.

Some dubs are done well and worth listening to, the problem i get is you have these japanese cartoons with japanese culture about japanese people talking in thick american accents. Completely ruins immersion for me. Plus they also often have to do some rather questionable translations to get the words to match the mouth movements.


It does vary though, Avatar was sufficiently western (probably because a westerner did it) that it was fine in English for example.

Good Dubs > Good Subs >  Bad Subs > Bad Dubs, in my opinion. Which is to say, dubs are pretty hit or miss. If it's good, you don't even think about it and it doesn't detract the way having to read subtitles does. If it's bad, it's all you can think about.

Gurren Lagann's dub is really good I think, well if it isn't good my bad because I happen to like it a lot.

Va on reaudio recording faces a host of issues.

The script has to be well translated.

The VA director has to know what the scene was suppose to convey.

The VA has to match his dialogue with the mouth movements of another language.

They do a pretty decent job, considering the issues. Also, if you listen to other language dubs, American don't seem so bad.

What I would love to see is that the mouths be digitally erased, and redrawn for the redub cast and rewrite the script instead of translating it.

However, that would be to expensive.

why all the hate for the TTGL dub?

I think the dub is great... I don't like kamina's sub voice. Too deep, it doesn't sound natural coming from someone of his body type.

The TTGL dub is pretty good all things considered. The cultural thing still annoys me, which is why i generally prefer subs over dubs, but the TTGL dub is definitely one of the better ones.

Actually, I don't see any TTGL dub hate in this thread, just general dub-directed hate. I for one wasn't trying to imply it was bad...I haven't even heard it.

I didn't like the Code Geass dub.  Mostly because I much preferred Lelouch's voice in the original (damnit, Koisume).

I swear it has nothing to do with the dub being censored.

And I suppose I watched the Rozen Maiden sub too, but the dub seems pointless for that one .
