Seriously though, Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, and all the other quintessential Shonen series have completely failed to interest me because they are just too Shonen.

Meh.  I have an enormous soft spot for Dragonball (the manga), mostly because it's hilariously over the top and also oddly understated.  The art carries the story far more than the writing does, and the time spent sitting around making expository dialogue/thought bubbles/whatever is fairly minimal in comparison to most shonen stuff.

It's one of the last members of the old Tezuka guard, and well worth enjoying.

Yeah, but look at most of the stuff other old artists draw ._.;;  Like... Rumiko Takahashi.  I actually can't tell her characters apart.

I know the entire run in the manga was just called "Dragonball", but in terms of anime, just to clear up : Dragonball was/is pretty awesome. Dragonball Z is when it lost me. Maybe it's just the nostalgia filter talking, but the original Dragonball falls into that shonen sweet spot that I find not mind-numbing. Only ever saw the first two arcs, though.

Okay, yeah.  I never had that much exposure to the anime, and mostly enjoyed it for its narmtacular goodness (i.e. the American voiceactors of terribad).

Well, and the character songs are some of the funniest things I've ever heard.  But in general, I'm with you on the anime.
