They're introduced in the teen episodes if I remember right.

If you consider The Simpson as anime then yes.

Strictly speaking to be an anime it needs to be an animation from Japan

Some people extend that definition however to any animation that at least copies that style. Hense why Avatar is often considered an anime.

Not to mention that in Child's works characters tend to show strength through character, often gentleness, which highly appeals to me. I don't like negative characters being the heros (The Rogue archtype never appeals to me for main characters).

It is the main reason why I can't stand Deathnote... I dislike Light and many episodes focus on him killing everyone.

My favorite endings have always been where everyone wins. Even the villain.

I don't like all villains, but some just land with me.
Light(Death Note), Creed(Black Cat), Hecate(Shakugan no Shana), Apos(Mnemosyne), Beatrice(Umineko no Naku Koro ni).
All of them I found enthralling and interesting.

Good characters, bad characters, both have likeables.

It is when they are main characters that things change.

I like Luca Blight for example (videogame character) but I'd never be able to watch a show where he was the main character.

Just have to say that Death Note disappoints me. There is something kind of significant that happens vaguely around the mid point, it seems to revolve around someone being incredibly stupid. I mean, they should have been able to make a deal or something... The manga probably explained it better, and emotions can make you silly, but the whole series seems to be more about stupidity than genius. I just don't find watching stupid characters to be satisfying, although I mostly watch stuff for the story anyway...

I agree, around midway, Death Note loses its charm.  I'd even say it's the moment that Light gets amnesia.  Right then and there is where things suddenly get weird.

The opposite is also true.
