I am feeling like more Excel Saga.

Is there another similar show yet?

Been reading (not watching, as usual) KonoSuba.
This is a case where the adaptation actually adds quite a lot, I recommend watching it. Or both, which is what I chose.
I was wondering when/if the elf was gonna show up. Might give it a try.

I said it, and I wasn't accusing anyone here of anything. Just taking a bit of a piss at the "white Japanese" problem. I do agree that it's a bit tough from an immersion perspective, but to me it makes sense as a practical concern. There's not that many Japanese people who are good actors in English. Japan's economy is too good for a lot of people to leave, and they have their own film scene which does quite well domestically.
It's truly unfortunate that there are no Americans with Japanese heritage who are dying to be cast in roles. Good thing there's no systematic bias in casting under the Hollywood system, proven by the fact that there was absolutely no alternatives than to cast a white woman.
There's a lot more that goes into casting concerns than "can we physically find a single asian woman" and "where was this story set originally?"

Notably, everybody always tries to poo-poo the "nobody wants a nonwhite main character" thing despite having zero data on it save for the occasional anecdote. Which is usually a pretty self-righteous assumption to make about the viewing preferences of whatever audience's really giving the good returns but is finicky enough to bother courting in that regard.

hey remember the lead actress role of pacific rim

look

there's a solution
Not very well, tbh. I remember the Australians and Russians a lot better than her, and I don't think "we made a movie starring that chick from Pacific Rim" would mean anything to me.

Then again, I don't remember the white guy who saved the world very well either. Black Fuckup's pretty vivid, but I don't think I'd especially want to see him in anything either.

idk, maybe you could compile a list of shows you've already seen (e.g. myanimelist). We've had this same conversation before.

I could suggest things like this, this, this or this as having a similar tone to Excel Saga, or maybe Pani Poni Dash, but we already had this same conversation, and last time you said "oh but the elements of <show X> that are similar to Excel Saga aren't the elements of <Excel Saga> that I want more of". Which makes it really hard to recommend stuff unless you bullet-point exactly what elements you want in a show that"s "similar".

For more recent idiotic comedies YMMV. Binbougami ga! was pretty darn funny, and had a lot of references to other series, Sabagebu was pretty good, and of course Squid Girl is another nice one. Tantei Opera Milky Holmes is pretty funny and episodic, but you have to stop after season two. Season 3+ were basically a reboot that wrecked everything people liked about the original series.

Just a hilarious parody that is a parody rather then parody flavored would suffice.

Hmm I'm not quite sure how you're defining that. Try out some of the suggestions I made, and let me know how you think they differ from Excel Saga.

Why not go whole hog and watch Lingerie Soldier Papillon Rose. It's a NSFW Sailor Moon parody (only watch the 1 episode OVA, later they rebooted it as a TV show, minus the smutty humor).

It is the difference between say... Excel Saga and Epic Movie.

Ok maybe not that.

I mean... a Parody not just a fantastic comedy.

The difference? a They are both funny... but a Parody's humor stems from the standard tropes, ideas, and concepts from its source material.

While a Comedy's humor stems from the tropes, ideas, and concepts it introduces INTO the situation.

So both a Comedy and a Parody can be about a Prince and Princess ruling a kingdom in a fantasy realm set in a very Dragon Quest world. Yet the parody might make fun of the story context of levels while a comedy will make fun of how the princess' boobs are flat (because Anime... just get the boob jokes out of the way)

uuugh why is it so hard to describe?

The anime that most overtly deals with tropes themselves is Tesagure Bukatsumono. But it's a complete deconstruction of the very type of show that it is, rather than a parody.

That's the one where the opening song's lyrics deconstruct every single shot in the opening itself. The writing is pretty good (actually, half of each episode is the voice actresses themselves adlibbing a brainstorming session for what the show could actually be about), but you have to excuse the animation. The entire show was made using the Miku Miku Dance software, not a professional animation suite.

A humorous deconstruction is a type of parody :P

The reason why a deconstruction isn't necessarily a parody is because it doesn't have to be a comedy.

I can't believe it. The military in Kuromukuro is actually able to effectively take out the giant demon robots without the ancient relic protagonist robot! What in the world is this? :P

Reminds me of Panty and Stocking where the police actually manage to take down an episodes villain. It doesn't stay that way because it is "unbeatable" but still, had the villain not had that one specific quality... BOOM!

I always knew that the court proceedings in Ace Attorney were dubious at best, but the latest episode really (unintentionally) emphasizes how outrageously illegal everything that Phoenix does is. Well, I suppose it isn't illegal in-universe, because Evidence and Trials are governed by a set of laws a child can memorize in a few minutes, but it highlights the exact kind of unjustness that actual laws are created to protect people from.

But hey, atleast we have WHAT'S YOUR NAME?

In universe and in Japan (at the time, they reformed their system today) as well.

The scary thing about Phoenix Wright is what parts of it are deathly accurate. It makes the series a satire.

What I do like about the series though is it remembers that neither Phoenix Wright nor Edgeworth are the badguys. Something I wish Hollywood would remember.

Also were the police actually not requires to share evidence with the defense attorney?

It seems like they're supposed to. The way Gumshoe reacted, it looked like he was going to get punished for the evidence not reaching Phoenix. Even though Edgeworth is probably responsible for the "mistake."

Anyway, I've really been enjoying the Ace Attorney anime! It is pretty much exactly what you'd want from an anime adaptation of Phoenix Wright.

I've played all the games, and I'm honestly still not sure if Gumshoe is Chief Wiggum-level of incompetent or if he's at Detective Zenigata levels of super-competence. He gets a randomly timed phone call asking him to show up to a location he could have never anticipated needing to be, and he's on the scene in literally less than 30 seconds.

Actually, now that I think about it, AA and Lupin the 3rd would be an awesome crossover, why haven't they done that yet? It's so obvious, and it has the bonus of tying Phoenix, Professor Layton, Lupin, and Detective Conan all into the same universe do to various crossovers.
