I want to see Angel Beats, since I hear a lot of good things about it, but I have such a hard time jiving with the whole look of the show.

Do it!  I loved Angel Beats and I don't normally like KEY stuff.

I liked the music and some of the characters in Angel Beats, but for the most part it was pretty 'meh'. Too much anime silliness for my tender tastes. Still seemed like a pretty well done for those who like that sort of stuff.

I need to watch something with a good storyline.

Any suggestions? I mean, it can be anything, just as long as it's not too heavy... or too silly. I'm really aching for something new to watch...

My apologies if I toss in some no-brainers, but here's a few that I've seen and would consider having a good storyline:

Baccano - Probation era US setting. It's pretty good. Somewhat serious from what I recall.
Princess Tutu - Lots of ballet, humans and anthropomorphic animals. Overall tone is serious enough but (un)fortunately it has your regular anime silliness here and there to cool things down.
Serial Experiments Lain - To be honest, it's been ages since I saw this but I remember it being quite interesting. Treks on the philosophical end of the Sci-Fi spectrum. Virtual reality and all that jazz. Reminds me of Blade Runner for some reason.

Out of those three, Princess Tutu is the silliest, but even then it's not that silly in the great scheme of things. For context, I've dropped at least one anime halfway through because I couldn't stand the infuriating silliness amidst superb, riveting and serious storytelling. Princess Tutu never got me even close to that threshold. And it's got a pretty good plot I assure you.

Anime with interesting stories eh?....Mmm, from the top of my head:

Monster for your drama, horror, mystery, & thriller needs.

Clannad + After Story has comedy, drama, romance and a pint supernatural stuff. One could liken it to a tapestry...all the pieces may seem different but in the end, it all comes together and became whole unto something wonderful.

Baccano stories that include the great depression, gangsters, train massacres, alchemy and immortals that's so spread out yet inevitably connected. There is no main character...
kinda/sorta' related:

Man. How could you read/watch/play EVERYTHING but not get around to Berserk? It's obviously not because you don't like spending thirty hours in a row watching everyone die.

Of course, that reminds me that I haven't read it in forever either. :-\

I read Berserk kinda recently too.
I'd kept hearing the bad stuff. Like there was a lot of sex/horrible violence/crazy stuff.
No one told me that I would actually care about the characters and that it had a good story.
I've read all there is on Spectrum Nexus.
Is the anime of it good?

Spoiler: Baccano (click to show/hide)

Anyways, having to listen to my mother tell me that so much anime is super perverted and horrible every time I try to make any anime-related purchase is getting annoying. All I want is to buy Angel Beats (pretty innocent all things considered, except for the first episode stating a goal to kill God) and The Bible: A Manga Rendition (looks fun to read, Bible has some neat stories). It really makes me want to go buy one of those body pillows from the Chinatown and see what her reaction is.

I have taken a train one time in my life (well twice to get back) and all I had was some guy staring at me funny.

Disappointing!  I guess it needed a more hard-to-say-out-loud name.

Admittedly a fair amount of it is, but that's true of any other medium as well. Trying showing her some of a good show and see if it changes her mind?

Speaking of Berserk, I am waiting for someone to sub the movie that came out recently. Hopefully it will be good.

It is sort of the law that whatever the anime is about the main character will never get a break from it.

I mean... Does Detective Conan ever as much as go to the bathroom without a murder to solve?
