Seeds under my floodgates
« on: November 22, 2008, 08:25:32 am »

Well, my fort just had it's first goblin invasion, and my squad of one champion, one axe lord, and one elite wrester cleaned 'em up. But I have a 3-tile wide entrance to my fortress, with floodgates which close up the entrance upon the pull of a lever. When I told everyone to get inside, some of my dwarves decided to drop a single seed underneath one of the floodgates, which prevented the floodgate fom closing when the lever is pulled - essentially, 2 of the 3 floodgates closed. Which is no good for fortress defense, of course.

Is there a way to prevent my dwarves from dropping stuff right there?

You could try using vertical bars instead.  I'm not sure they get jammed like that.

Or you could use small drawbridges. We know those don't get jammed. ;D

If you're trying to atom-smash something blocking a floodgate, you're probably going to smash the floodgate too.  Or more likely, the game won't let you build the bridge at all.

You can use drawbridges as floodgates. They block water when raised.

Yeah, man.  Draw bridges raise up and make a wall.  That's how they work in the real world.

In addition to that awesomeness, the drawbridge requires only two mechanisms to link to a lever, whereas floodgates require two mechanisms per tile.

When you use adamantine mechanisms, this becomes very important...

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Yes. You just have to make sure you don't build a retractable bridge instead by accident.

I'm thinking the sarcasm didn't translate into text too well.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic.  That's really how drawbridges work.  They open up a gap, and at the same time, seal an opening in a wall so that a rudimentary bridge across the new gap isn't enough to get across.

Just build a dry moat under the bridge.  For bonus chutzpah points, put the barracks in that moat.

I wasn't, though I can see how it would come off that way.  I'd just never thought of trying that.
