small island

Quote
06/13/2008: 261. Rivers are mostly fixed. Here's a movie of a one-tile island, made possible by the new map smoothing. It was inhabited by a group of macaques until my dwarves took over. (CMV of same movie)

this is now some time ago, and i wanted to make a robinson crusoe like hermit fortress on such an island.. but somehow i am inable to find a propper island, all, and really all islands are at least in 2 tiles of the region fit (so the middle one)

i generated now about 50 worlds just to find no small island to settle on (alle 4 edges should be water) i wouldnt care if its in a lake or ozean, but somehow i really want to do this.

so maybe a bug or some changes in recent versions destroyed this "map smoothing" in some case?

but anyway: does someone got a neat 40d map with a small island that i can fit in a 4x4-7x7 with water on all edges, maybe a bit wildlife and/or vulcano too, but not terrifiying, a undead invasion for an single dwarf would be to much ;p

I think Toady painted those islands. I also wanted to make such a fortress, but I don't want to do it enough to figure out the interface for making terrain.

Although I would appreciate such an island + volcanic vent. Who doesn't want to make a volcano island lair? Actually, what would be best is a peninsula with a very small access to the mainland so sieges still come.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I'm just waiting for Toady to implement boats and ports, then I'm building all my forts on an island.

Here, i painted a world which wound up with a one tile island. I forgot which one it is, but there's not that many to check. The island had a family of groundhogs on it when i checked it. I suggest embarking at the southern edge of the island because the northern edge has steep cliffs.

The island is a tad big and spans a bunch of z-levels, but since you'll only be using one dwarf and there's minimal wildlife you should be ok.

When you gen a world with parameters press p when in the parameters screen.

You have to make sure that no non-ocean tiles touch the edge of the map. Otherwise it counts as 'connected' as far as migrants and caravans are concerned. Note that the sand tiles when setting the size of the fort counts as ocean so those can touch the edges. Looks like you're stuck with the bigger map, don't worry it shouldn't lag too much. I tested it with one dwarf and it ran really well. Already almost a year in and i've already carved out a dwelling in the cliffside with all the fittings and have a little patch of prickle berries. Groundhog population has already effectively doubled too, the 2 females gave birth to a total of 5 babies.

Any ideas on a big project i can do? My dude is already comfortably settled in and i can't really think of anything to do. Maybe i'll have him make a wooden crossbow and bolts and hunt one of the groundhogs.

Is there a wiki page detailing the paint interface?  I couldn't get anything to happen last I tried.

For the best results paint the island with an elevation brush of 101 and paint the surrounding ocean with an elevation brush of 80.
