I did some digging a few months ago into the roguelike genre and found some games which probably most people haven't heard of which are pretty innovative and fun.  I made a blog post about them on my Philosophical Gamer blog.  I find the Doryen Library/Chronicles of Doryen project especially interesting.

hmm interesting (outerspace). empire building... also a Blish reference : cities in spaaaaaace!

AND: Wowee paradroid! :D (threw my handdrawn ship maps away only several years ago)

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but there's a sci-fi survival game with roguelike elements called Notrium which is a really, really great little-known freeware game which someone sent to me a few days ago.  It's literally a commercial-quality game.  I've made a post about it on my blog: Notrium.

nice retro console site...the front end seems to work well...tons of cool free content.  Think back to that game you never got to play....<wavy lines, Nostalgia theme>
