Sand != Sandy?
« on: October 30, 2008, 10:19:38 pm »

I'm picking a site for a new fortress, and I want to be sure that I can make glass.  Obviously you can get sand from Tan Sand, Yellow Sand, White Sand, etc.  But what about Sandy Clay, Sandy Loam, and Sandy Clay Loam?

Because throwing sandy clay in a kiln doesn't make glass... nor is there any easy way to separate them.

So, to clarify, the only things that make glass are things with the word "sand" in their name, and not ones with "sandy".

Yes, and that should lock this thread up...

Right, because its loamy. Noone wants loam in their sand, it would just be lame.

Yes, silly me not wanting a bunch of random compounds mixed in with my silicon oxides and carefully chosen impurities.  It's not the chemistry which is keeping me from doing it, it's the name.

Well to be fair, it really isn't easy to remove the silicate sand from a mixture like that. You may be able to wash it out with a washboard as the lighter stuff would float off, but I don't know.

To be fair, not every player is a geologist. Many expect something called "sand" to be sand. While in fact the only "sand" soil types are these [colour] sand ones.
So most of the time the player will get something else than he's expecting based on information he get in the game.

There is a easy fix. In matgloss_stone_soil.txt, add [SOIL_SAND] to whatever soil you want to be sandy. It will apply to the game in progress as well. For example:
[MATGLOSS_STONE:LOAMY_SAND]
[NAME:loamy sand][COLOR:6:6:1][TILE:177]
[SOIL][AQUIFER][SOIL_SAND]
[SOLID_DENSITY:1600]
