New Poll :: Suggestion Types
« on: September 08, 2008, 01:27:04 pm »

I'm activating the poll, the following catagories seem to have popular acceptance if not acclaim.

Problem Fix : Some features are either broken or problematic.  A few examples are (Sparring, Rent, Impossible Noble Demands).  Play might be more fun if the common complaints were resolved.
Feature Improvement : Farming, Underground Features, and mechanical traps exist, but some people want these features to be more fleshed out.
New Features : The army arc is a good example of a host of new toys and interactions with the game.  As it stands, the current guilds suggestion would also be a new set of features
Raw Controls : There's a lot of things that happen just because and there's people that want control over everything, from rock uses to halfbreed creatures.
Interface Improvements : More mouse control, third party interface support, help files, prettier graphics.  Anything that has more to do with aesthetics than actual play.

I'd like to start a poll about suggestion types.  It's come up in the main suggestion poll thread that it isn't fair to lump major new arcs with simple specific suggestions.  I figured I'd back things up entirely and try to figure out what people most want catagorically.  This is going to be a full fledged poll, but first I'd like to make sure I've got the catagories down.

The question will read 'which of these areas is most important to you?'  Am I missing anything?

Interface might be another category.  It isn't really a game feature, which most of your categories seem to refer to; rather it is just a program feature.  In other words, game design elements and application design elements are two different types of elements.

And the category is sufficiently diverse to be more than just a single request.  On the human-to-computer side, you have requests for more mouse control, more consistent keyboard control, better list management.  On the computer-to-human side, you have requests for better in-game help, better graphics set support, alpha blending support, more colors, and so on.

Good call.  Barring public outcry, I'm going to leave it as one catagory though

Yeah, that's certainly appropriate.  I was just listing items to show that it is a category of multiple items and not just a single item.

I'm torn between Feature Improvement and Problem Fixes for what I'd like to see most.  Probably because I see some thing as being both.  I.E. sparring: you could fix it like a bug (auto-switching of weapons, but leaves the good steel ones unowned), or you could make it into a full feature allowing the player some control over it (use these weapons here [rack with parameters designating a Room for sparring], just drop your weapon in the rack and pull out one of the silver ones--dwarf owns both until he's done sparring, then disowns the training weapon).

I'm not too sure what this accomplishes as it's already perfectly possible to denote what sort of suggestion it is in the thread title.   Likewise, it's usually pretty obvious.

I suspect the concern is that it is hard to decide whether to vote for "fix this niggling little problem that bugs everyone" or "add an entire magic system with 30 schools of study that can each reach legendary and ALSO have the ability to interact in amazing ways". The first is a simple tweak we might really want to see, while the second requires pages of exposition on exactly how it would work. I might really, really love the latter suggestion, but is it really fair to compare it to "make it easier to build a wall"? That seems to be the topic this thread is trying to consider. Would it make better sense to have SEPARATE "top suggestions" threads for each kind of feature, or do we really want to be choosing between entire magic systems and tweaks when picking "favorite suggestions"?

I don't see why. I've never had a problem with the current system.

Stupid Noble's take on those #$%! managed threads.
« Reply #9 on: September 08, 2008, 09:56:23 pm »

Seeing as I have blood on my hands, I think I can propose a good solution:

Next round of the Top10 just doesn't include complex topics. If you can't describe it in a one line blurb it doesn't go in.

The managed threads started as being sub-topics of the Top10, but experience has shown they are more than capable of staying alive and filling their function without being in the polls.

Further, they don't even need to be in the polls, since Toady is going to take a good solid look at any thread that is 10 pages of on-topic discussion, doesn't devolve into a flame war, and has the thread manager constantly updating the original post as discussion evolves.

But just so the managed threads don't die (they do get a lot of traffic from the Top10) we could have a single stickied managed thread that lists them. The maintainer could just keep them separated by activity: Active, Slow, Dead. I'd do if nobody else will. Tormy's thread is also an ideal candidate, as long as the managed threads are given a separate section (and top billing darn it!)
