Author Topic: I just thought of a way to add on to the current mandate system. Also, meetings.  (Read 2996 times)

After a particularily violent failed mood, I noticed one of my unhappy miners complaining to my mayor (i.e. the "attend meeting" task) and was suddenly struck by inspiration.

When a dwarf complains to a mayor, the mayor should occasionally make a mandate related to the unhappy dwarf's reasons to be unhappy. For example, if a significant amount of dwarfs who have slept in the dirt lately conduct a meeting with the mayor, the dwarf mandates some beds. If the carpenters have been "unsatisfied at work lately" (i.e. haven't done much carpenting recently), the mayor mandates some wood items. If a dwarf has been forced to endure the decay of a friend, the mayor mandates some coffins.

This obviously wouldn't work for everything, of course ("sustained major injuries lately," for example. Then again, maybe more armor...?).

I looked through the dev pages and didn't find anything relating meetings to mandates (though it's possible I missed it). It is, however, similar to Bloat78, but is slightly different, so it could be added on to it, perhaps.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

This fits perfectly into the role of the Mayor as a kind of super-citizen and not Mountainhome nobility.  I like it a lot.

The strand extractors have not had much work lately. I mandate five adamantine thongs.

The strand extractors will then be hammered for their failure. Problem of lazy extractors solved.
I like the idea, but there is a possible gap in meta-logic:
Carpenters complain about lack of work, mayor mandates wood items, wood items not produced due to lazy user, carpenters are then hammered for failing to produce said items.

well, mandates are always going to be the bane of the lazy user.  Though it would be nice if some mayors actually bothered to investigate trouble sources.  So, if the wood item mandate was not met, the program will do a check for available wooden logs.  If there are no available wooden logs (craftsdwarfs in the clear), the program will assign punishment to a woodcutter instead.

Of course, you could go crazy with this and string it along - oh, but the woodcutters don't have axes!  Blame the blacksmith!  But the blacksmith doesn't have any requisite metal bars!  Get the furnace operator!  But we have no magma pit, and - again - there are no logs to burn into coal!  Anyway, we have no ores either!  That's the miners' fault!  But all the miners are finding is limestone and clay!  Why didn't we just trade for freakin' axes if it was so important?!

And thusly, the broker's post would become the most dangerous job in the fortress.

To be honest theres only 1 thing what I dislike in DF so far, and those are the mandates...actually it might looks like fun + annoying for new players, but as you play more and more, its just annoying and not fun at all.

Well..reasonable mandates then.  I guess I've just gotten lucky so far with my nobles.  :p

Seriously though, I think there would be a lot less justified noblecide around here if mandates actually took the biome's resources into account.  So I guess my statement is geared more long-term.  Mandates probably aren't going to go away, but improvements on mandates are inevitable.  Eventually, they will stop being hair-pullingly impossible to fulfill sixty percent of the time.

it would be very nice if after checking for cut logs they checked to see if there were any trees growing

Hammer the miners for not finding an underground river to grow towercaps with!

Hammer the army for not assulting the Elves and siezing their wood!

Hammer the Earth for not providing us with wood!

Maybe the Mayor would just be unhappy (for his citizens) rather than order someone hammered.
