Magma Votive (non game related)
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:14:09 pm »

I saw this in a catalog and thought hmmm...looks like something made by a possessed craftsdwarf who was impatient with waiting for the magma to harden into obsidian.  Or possibly mandated by a noble who liked fire imps, or a player who decided to mod in flaming craft goods - just to see what would happen when the elf trader accepted an !!Obsidian Votive!! and then left with a pack of useless wooden goods.  Just be sure to bring it to the trade depot in an Iron bin...

Technically it's made of glazed dolomite not obsidian but IMHO that's a minor point.

If a "warm, vivid and contemporary" candle holder costs 50☼ I'd rather just use a Felsite Block and stick a candle on it for 2☼.

I like this quote:

Quote
When developing Magma Stone, the designer Pernille Vea gathered inspiration from the glowing interior of the earth. The burning red glazing sharply contrasts the dark, charcoal grey exterior resembling coagulated lava. Both outside in the garden and inside in the living room, the Magma Stone resembles a vivid picture of the primordial forces of the earth. Made in China.

When you've settled on a volcano, and the only non-igneous layer is siltstone :'(
...a big switch from my last fort, which was dug into a mountain rather completely consistent of dolomite and various iron ores.

Dolomite is a flux stone, that's why it's so expensive. I wonder if they're selling any -Chalk mechanisms-?

 Candle: 2☼
 Skilled designer: 500☼

Selling this for 50☼ even though chinese orphans make it cost 13☼ to make: priceless.

Yeah, they should sell it for exactly how much it costs to produce.  Then they'd make a lot of profit I'm sure.

A 400% profit seems like a bit much.

In America, you can buy a particular antibiotic for $12 a pill.

In India, you can buy an eight-pack of the same brand from the same company for $1.

Americans can (more likely) afford $12 a pill.  Plus, it's harder to get the crap pushed through for sale in America, with all the regulation and whatnot.

There are two walmarts in the area here, about twenty miles apart.  The one in the less affluent area has prices about 5% lower.  Why?  Because walmart knows what people will pay.

Capitalism sucks, but it's how the world works you know.
