More special attacks like "Dragon Breath"
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:15:09 am »

It would be awesome to have more special attacks for the creatures, like the dragon breath for the dragons.
..or maybe Toady plans to add something like these in the Combat Arc / Magic Arc?

It would seem that much of this is waiting until magic makes it in so, as many exotic attack types will be probable covered by that system.

Oh I hope earlier than that, Toady plans to add magic after DF v1.0 is out according to the dev page. I guess v1.0 wont be released for years...at least if I check the dev list items + version numbers that is the conclusion  :-\

Well, what would you add?
Cyclops could get... eyebeam?
Bronze Colossus... earthshaking stomp?
Titans throw bolts of lightning?

Good ideas!  ;)
The palette is quite huge that what could we add. Only the sky is the limit!
Btw now that I think about this, perhaps special attacks will come with the magic arc as someone has said it already. When we will have spells, it will be possible to add spells for the creatures, and they will work as special attacks for them. IE. Spellcaster can cast lightning bolt, but if we add that single spell to a titan it will look like a special attack.

Halitosis as a breath weapon.  Dwarves that eat too much plump helmut, they have it.

Leach for certain undead.

Different types of dragons with different attacks.

Artifact attacks (Legendary mace of Lightning!  KABOOM!)

More varied fire attacks (Fire wall, Exploding Fireball, etc) for magmamen and fire imps

And more!

Sounds like for these special attacks to work, and hence magic to be implemented, the whole health/bio systems would need to be vamped up. I mean, when something uses a dragon breath, not only would we want parts of creatures to get burnt (not the whole creature), but we'd want them to scar and scab. We'd want an ice bolt to freeze limbs, and lightning bolts to cause convulsions and fits. For each type of attack Toady implements we'd want a corresponding effect other than damage, and a corresponding cure or preventative (salves for burns, rubber-soled boots or rubber-lined armour for lightning, etc).

Even non-magical special attacks could work.  Like poison and webbing, which are already in game.

Yep, or something like breath acid, or even animate undead, if there are corpses nearby...ah well propably we gotta wait for a magic system/arc to see stuff like these...and its very far.  :-[
