Hopefully when adventure mode skills are put in, you can carve a statue for yourself up there. Giant tibetan eagles can perch on it.

There aren't actually climbing skills/equipment are there? This is just looking for slopes to make it up?

Indeed, I think some climbing boots / pickaxe + rope combo would make for nice climbing gear(tools). Perhaps some worldgen formulas whereas towns within a certain distance of mountain peaks are more likely to carry climbing gear. Or just implement a movement mode that enables climbing, performance based on strength / agility.

Also does heavier clothing exist in game? Specifically clothing that is more resistant to cold? I would imagine a Sasquatch cape would be better than an salamander-man hat.

Anyways... amazing that toady could implement the peak messages / elevations so quickly! A new world and expedition must be embarked upon. I'd like to see someone take a large climing team (of drunks most likely) to the top.

Donner party anyone?

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread, but I've discovered a MUST HAVE for the would-be mountain climber:

Barrels of RUM.

Gotta get em from an abandoned fort, but they don't freeze when it gets all frigid.  Perfect.

Pity there's no way to recruit a dog and make him carry it for you.

Gear would be cool, as well as atmosphere effects on the lungs. I imagine dwarves probably wouldn't have to worry about that too much since they live in mountains for the most part, but it'd be nice to see humans and elves get shortness of breath/passing out/dying if they don't keep a slow pace as they get higher.

The main thing I want to see toady put in is jumping. Maby even a jumping skill? The higher your skill the less chance you have of breaking your legs on a jump.

This would be good if we could carry live creatures in adventure mode.  That way we could safe our buddies/meatshields, and vice versa.  It would also be awesome in combat to pick someone up and hurl them off a cliff.

The fortress-free solution is to check out all the Giant caves in the area. Chances are that they have some booze lying around on the ground you can stuff in your backpack.

Heres an idea. How about we hold a compitition to construct the most challanging mountain to climb. It could be full of overly complex traps and maby some riddles. False safety zones and secrete passages. All while keeping the "Old forgoten mountain fortress" feel, that is no sign of any thing living there for a long time. No corpses of dead pets or random clothes strewn around...maby a few nick nacks...necklaces braclets and such. But nothing else. Who is willing to try to make a fort like this? =]

Would be a VERY, VERY small, linear mountain/dungeon, and you'd have to export a hell of a lot of stuff. But use Dwarf utility, edit the embark stock and make a giant mountain castle on the top of the mountain going 15 z lvls up....

I'll be right back.

The random-clothes thing is impossible to avoid, you know.
Unless you completely remove all clothes from your dwarves prior to worldgen..  *shudders*

I was thinking..more like..either atom smash the dwarves while wearing the clothes or some how make them drop the clothes and atom smash them.
