Something's really wrong here...

I embarked in the middle of a mountain or something (using embark anywhere) and the game is really slow.  Usually at the start the dwarves zip around like crazy with only 7 of them, but it's just as slow as my other 250 dwarves fortress.  What gives?

How many Z-levels are in your map? The more - the slower, and mountains tend to produce variations in height, hence more z-levels

It doesn't seem to be compatible with 40d, it just says 'please start Dwarf Fortress' and dies.

Are you using: 0.28.181.40d or 0.28.181.40d#?

If you're using a 0.28.181.40d#, then try redownloading it, I updated it a day or two ago that should be compatible with df.28.181.40d and df.28.181.40d#.

If you truely are using 0.28.181.40d, then I must've of botched my update.

It works for me.  I've re-uploaded the zip file, try again please.

If it still doesn't work, post the output it generates using DebugView.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's all I got, it's just telling me to start DF.

Ok, I reuploaded it, again.

Just in case your browser is caching an old zip file and reusing it: http://www.geocities.com/jifodus/embarkanywhere.zip?1

If it shows a message, it should now list a version number of the utility and which versions of DF it should be compatible with.

Hmm, just tried it with a completely fresh DF download on a completely different computer, the version was still 40d, and all it came up with was telling me to start DF, and the version number of the utility and which versions it was compatible with, of course.

This is odd, what version of Windows are you running?

Also, I changed it again, so that it now shows a more detailed message explaining why it failed.

Hm, My desktop is Windows XP 64-bit, my laptop is regular old Windows XP.

Anyway.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Out of curiosity, you're not telling it to search for dwarf fortress.exe, right?
Cuz the 40d versions are just called dwarffort.exe

That error means that it found DF, but for some reason, the utility doesn't have permission to change DF.  Are you by chance using a limited/non-administrator account?

Nope, both these accounts are administrators, so I can't imagine what the deal is.
I'm gonna try changing a few settings on my desktop, just out of curiousity.

I've tried it on my 64-bit windows xp installation, and it didn't work either.  After I spent time debugging it, I'm going to say, that it's a compatability issue with x64.

Napkin, are you running any anti-virus software?
