I don't know if it really matters, but if you edit the text file that is generated by saving a worldgen parameter set, you can create worlds outside the normal limits.  Say, ten thousand degrees minimum temp.  Then you get things like:

Which is kind of horrible.

Anyway, there you go.

Killed by their own armor. Truly, fate is a cruel mistress.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Heh, I modded the dwarves to live in this kind of heat for this setting.

I built a seaside fortress to satisfy my curiosity.

THE OCEAN BOILED AWAY.

It wall all dry with driftwood and a wall of steam on the side of the map the ocean came in on.

Lots of fun.

My only problem with this is that how did you start an adventurer in this world?

All the buildings should've exploded/melted, and all the people should've burst into flames >.>

Silly worldgen!

BTW: I am going to do this as well. :D

Edit: This is awesome.

"You lose hold of the !!XXCat Leather WaterskinXX!! !"

Edit 2: Dwarf mode is even better. Boiling dwarven rum, etc. Awesome.

Edit 3: A new bug --- entering improper values into the worldgen.txt file and then generating a new world locks up the game. I was trying to get a freezing world.

Edit 4: The temperature was so low that the demon of a local goblin civ died once I showed up.

When I embarked on my next fortress, I got a notification that the age had changed.

VERY AWESOME :D

Haha so impossible to run a fort in 10,000 degree temps.

All your booze explodes, your animals turn to bones in about three seconds, and your picks melt.  Thankfully my dwarves are heat immune, but still haha.

You can't dig because your picks vaporize, and you just thirst to death in a few days since booze is exploded and the ocean boils away.

It's excellent.

Still in the freezing world, I have now massacared the entire Goblin civ, most of the dwarven civ, and the dragon, along with discovering a random glitch that wagons explode when exposed to the extreme cold. Dunno why.

Also pets/animals are more resistant to cold than dwarves/goblins/megabeasts?

Edit: I should mention it is now the age of dwarves. Good luck going outside though.

I dunno if it is the same reason that the wagon explodes, but I've noticed that one step after starting an adventurer in a -5000 degree world, all my equipment is XXRope Reed SkirtXX style.

Maybe the wagon just gets damaged quickly and explodes.

Yeah, everything has a set point where it starts taking damage from extreme lack of heat. I dunno what the default is, but it's probably somewhere above -5000.

I'm going to combine this newfound excellence with a total conversion mod.  Make everything heat proof (mostly), and play DF in a !!world!!

Finally, my Hellmod won't be pretend!

The lack-of-heat damage is not -5000... the world I'm in has temp -1000 to -800 and I just found a XXPig Tail HatXX. I'll have to see if steel/etc are affected. I think it's in the raws though.
