39c..total and complete crop failure
« on: July 19, 2008, 01:00:55 am »

This is a new one.

Okay, here's what's happening. 16 year of the fortress. Things run smoothly on cooked massive stockpiles of food. Suddenly one crops stop growing in ALL my fields. I figure it's a fluke or something, change my settings around..check field fertility...seems alright. Alright. I have spawn, proper field settings, and multiple types of fields in multiple locations. Okay.

But nothing grows. I have the farmers, the spawn, the settings, and several fields WAITING to be tilled in spring. But nothing. Belowground is silent. Above ground is silent. Different crops are silent.

It's now the second year, and frankly becoming concerned.

I think I may have figured it out. After some-rearranging I believe the seeds may be stuck in their bags.

So. Watch out for bags?

Okay, I think I've got it figured out. I think.

The seeds are stuck in constructed bags used as containers. They get trapped in limbo and are un-usable by anyone. If you're at the limit of 200 seeds for your desired crop, OBVIOUSLY VERY BAD.

So watch those constructed bags! Use coffers, chests, whatever.

So basically the bug is filled bags being usable in construction?

Is that a bug or is it just expected behavior of constructed ? Stockpiles can hold bags of seeds. If you wanted to keep those bags near your fields, and so you uilt  from your seed bags, you could've just designated stockpiles and made them specific to seeds in the settings menu (should be possible, never did it myself).

Just wondering, do you routinely use uilt  for planting from? The only use I've seen for containers is for Dwarves to manage their own possessions/coins, not for working jobs.

EDIT: Working with what Neoskel said, are you saying that's the bug? Even then, you can just unuild those bags as a temporary workaround. Confirm/deny though, so we can be sure what your gripe is. :P

If so, it should be easy enough to check if it always occurs. Embark with a single bag full of seeds; try to build a container from it. See if you can still plant.

If it does replicate from such as simple test case, it's quite an issue. :)

Hello!

Something unrelated to the potential bug, but I was wondering why you would want to build a bag as furniture. As far as I know, it is equivalent to coffers and coffers are much easier to create than bags (mason or carpenter vs. either butcher - tanner - leatherworks or (farm workshop n/a with silk) - loom - clothier). Or is there a hidden benefit to built bags?

Personally when I am mass-creating containers for my bedrooms I just quickly hit enter three times and move on, I don't even look at what container it is. A lot of the times it gives them bags on the floor instead, not like I care though, they still use them.

It's certainly possible to make custom stockpiles for each type of seed.  I've used that technique several times to speed unloading and planting in new fortresses.  Works like a dream.

The only answer I got is that bags are more expensive and raises room value faster.

Just wondering, but did deconstructing the bags give you use of the seeds again?

I believe so. I'm planting again, which is a definite step up from ZERO planting.
