Author Topic: Unintended side-effect of the new sleep system - Murderous traps!  (Read 2002 times)

I'm pretty sure this would be applicable on all the 39s...

The new sleep system has dwarves/humans/etc being unconscious as they sleep.

An old "feature"/bug is that traps attack unconscious things, no matter what.

I have some peasants detailing the front entry way to my fort. It's lined with stone-fall-traps. I haven't assigned them beds yet.

They fall asleep on the traps, and "splat"! "Engraver has been killed by a trap".

This is one possible way to handle population growth... hopefully I don't get a tantrum spiral though...

Yeah this has happened to me. It makes sense that somebody falling asleep on top of a trap isn't going to be able to avoid it very well. However, it doesn't really make sense that dwarves decide that sleeping on the stone fall trap they just loaded would be a good idea.

Then again, making sense isn't one of this games strong points.

Wait, now I can cadge dwarves?

This means you can theoretically have valuable dwarves escape the hammerer!

The question is, can you sell excess population to the elves?

The question is, can you sell excess population to the elves?
Only if they happen to be hungry.

I can't wait to see a screenshot of somebody trading with the elves and getting a counteroffer for a dwarf child cadge.

I wonder how much a dwarf is worth. If they're worth is anything like thier actual value, then selling Lye Makers isn't worth the loss of a cage.

hm, so in order to test this you need...

A carpenter, a mechanic, a stone, a piece of wood, and a test subject.

Also, to be able to survive until the autumn caravan.

Preferably, station a military test subject on the cage trap and don't build any beds. You could also trap him in a hole so he couldn't run towards food and then sleep... if you felt like it. Cave in around him.

Or you can remove the hammerer without getting a replacement.

"Why yes, dear Mountainhome representative, the hammerer is in perfect health.  We recently situated him in new quarters, and haven't heard any complaints so far.  What?  You want to talk to him?  I'm afraid he's all tied up..."

I tried to resist correcting, but you kept saying it.

It's "cage", man.  "Cage".  No "d".

 Blarg.

Sorry, I'm on my crappy laptop. Something about something prevents firefox(And it's spellchecker to check for the times I slip up and revery to my way of spelling before I learned how to spell words) from being installed, so only IE for me.

Cage from now on. Unless I lapse again, as I often do. Spellchecker is my version of an AA meeting.

Sweetness. I am going to build a fortress around this concept.
"Imprisonedbeards"

My only worry is that the Elves will feel insulted that the Dwarf I am selling them is wearing leather.

This could lead to interesting traps involving champions.

You know how in the guides about traps and entrance halls, you hear about a cage full of war-dogs just around a bend to be released on gobbos?

 Replace war-dogs with Champions.

I wonder if dwarves in cages still need to eat and drink. Can glass cages be used on them? Are they perfectly preserved? Can you melt the dwarf-cage if it's made of metal?

I saw a video where a dwarf cage was melted, the dwarf inside attacked the melter before succumbing to massive injuries.

It'll be too bad if this is not kept in some fashion.  I was hoping the cheaper-mechanism traps would have a higher probility to malfunction or that dwarves would have a small chance to be absent minded, which help a great deal toward balancing out traps - especially before burrowing armies are designed.
