So i started playing and year after year there were no immigrants. I was down to 5 dwarves and had dug into HFS early, but fortunatelly could block that passageway before all hell broke lose. Now a few years later my king comes dressed as a peasant. Except my king is an elf, and looking at the civ screen, everyone in my dwarven civ is an elf. The elven civs are extinct. And i guess no immigrants come because elfs dont dig that good.

The problem is that the elf king stays at the edge of the map, even with a clear path and unlocked doors to my fortress. Sooner or later the skeletal camels that have defended my fortress from absolutely all goblins should find the king and fix him up good.

The goblin attacks have been mostly Human lead. The camels don't really care.

Do you know if that situation arose due to a bug or due to dwarves conquering elf sites in world gen (you can make a copy of the save and check the legends if it's not too much trouble)?  I think parts of dwarf mode can handle non-dwarven fortress members, and parts of it expect dwarves, so it's probably something to do with that.  At the beginning of the project, I used race to differentiate between dwarves and their pets, but this is no longer viable and just needs to be tracked down where it still happens.

Toady i will check the legends, but if i understand correctly that would only explain why the king in an Elf.

However the Elf King did not move to my fortress, did not show in the noble list, and in the unit list was listed as Friendly and not grouped with my dwarves. When he showed up he was the last sentient creature listed on the unit list, after caged goblins even.

After the King idled for a while, maybe half a season, my first real immigrant wave arrived. A bunch of dwarfs, that worked normally. The King still did not move or show up in noble list. Then the ske. camels got him.

I got the message that immigrants had arrived when the King arrived (alone), not when the dwarves arrived later. I only noticed the dwarves because suddenly i had more idlers than i thought i had dwarves.

Maybe the king was "blocking" the path to your fortress, and the other migrants were waiting him to move. It happen with military immigrants, who stay at the edge and the map and don't move until you assign them a squad (or until their migrant statut disappear).. maybe the king decided to move a bit, thus allowing the other immigrants to access the map.

Timst - he had moved a few squares without the immigrants showing up. He was moving, but just idling on the area of the map where he first showed up.

Toady - I checked the legends screen, in civilizations and other entities. I looked at the end of the legends for every elf group. They were massacred, which may be explained because my worldgen settings were aiming for a lot of volcanos and evil.

The elvens civs:

~60% Their last legend was an attack by another civilization
~30% Their last legend was being defeated by another civilization and having a governor take power

The rest ended up impaled, except for two that just seemed to vanish without any strife and have no legends after year 6 and 36.

In case it wasn't clear, often the conquerors of the elves were dwarfs, so yes they could have conquered them assimilated them and have been outbred by them.

The lesson here is that impaled things don't outbreed you.

Unless they're zombies, then they'll just rise up.

Same thing is happening to me in 40d11, except the king is a regular dwarf. (As is everyone else in my civ.)

He does have a slightly injured second toe on his left foot, so at first I though he was having trouble walking. Eventually he started moving slightly around (thereby unleashing a bunch of royal guards and the advisor onto the map), but he never goes far from where he started. :(

Similar to the King bug that has been reported before, but my king went straight to the meeting hall and stays there, marked as 'Visitor.' His advisor is still marked as friendly and stuck on the edge of the map. Using 40d11.

What race is your king?

Dwarven. His race displays as "Ruler/King," and I've previously encountered him in Adventure mode.
