It's really annoying. I dug a moat for a drawbridge, and want to get rid of the stairs. So i channeled the down staircase, but the idiotic dwarf goes DOWN the staircase and digs from there. Is there some way to counter this stupid behavior?

Untill recently, before stocks ran out, it rained cats and dogs in my fortress...

Screw the dwarf and flood the moat, that is the ture DF way of playing.

What happens if you build a constructed stair, then rig up a dungeon collapse over it?

Or, if you only care about making the pit unexitable, build a stair in the middle and temporarily make a bridge.

Problem is, it's just a pit. No water to put in it (yet), and i'd rather keep all my dwarves alive, at least until i get some expendable migrants.

Normally I dig out a platform and channel the stairways from the side, when I'm building a well. But in your case, I'd say making a service entrance tunnel in the side, and then walling said side off would work best for you, at least until you could use said tunnel to fill the moat... WITH DOOM.

Ok, this idea works for me, i'll just get rid of the stairs (ramps now actually) when i'm ready to pump the aquifer in.

Excuse me, a swarm of bats just dispersed in front of my fortress, i want to see how many i can bag. Too bad they ain't edible.

They don't have [VERMIN_EATER] in their raw file. My guys have been happily munching on two-egged-rhino-lizards and fluffy wamblers.

Also, something wierd happened. A kobold showed up while the merchants were still around. The merchant guards chased it off the map, but two of the merchants and their muskoxen crawled away to my internal trade depot (i was going to deconstruct the outside one) and now they won't leave. And i mean crawl, they're all prone on the ground, even the muskoxen. I'm gonna try deconning the inside depot.

Edit: Darn, didn't work. But deconning both did. Silly traders. They also left a bunch of stuff behind  :D.

Having two depots messes up merchants. Last time I did that I ended up with merchants squatting in my basement for the rest of the game :P

Recess the stairs into the moat wall, and build a floor over them?

That looks pretty good, just hope the builder doesn't have the bright idea of building the floor from the bottom staircase...

Sounds like a perfect time to redirect some magma for heating purposes.

Use a pole and a rope ladder and a big ax ::)

And choose when to cut it....
(when the miner is up or down)

There should be a difference in construction options. A speedy way a rope ladder and or graplinghook. For digging pits and moats. Easy to remove and to construct.

And a permanent way a stair case/ramp for heavy duty use.
