Dwarven Desperation
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:17:49 am »

Now, first of all, simply putting all your immigrants in a room and forbidding the door is quite an easy way to kill them.
Why don't they, while dieing of dehydration, say:

"Screw the rules , I'm getting some water!"

Because, the door isn't locked whatsoever. Just "Forbidden".

So? Make some locks!

Next, you know the poor soldier who got his foot mangled?
He stays in bed, dieing of dehydration.

Why doesn't he, in a total act of despairation, climb (Fall) out of bed and walk (Crawl painfully) to some water and food?! It is my understanding that dieing of dehydration or starvation are two of the worst ways to go, and two of the hardest at times!

Next:
Urist: So... hungry...
Bomrek: I...Know...
Urist: Need... foo-
Urist: Is... that... a... kitten?..
Bomrek:No...It's a... Juicy... steak...
Cilob:Not fluffy! NoOoO!

And finally:
Remember the Donner party?
Yeah.

I'm so for this, it'd be a *BIT* more challenging to design my death chambers then. Hell, if an area is known to kill dwarves, why not have dwarves sometimes avoid that area, even if forced to go there on military patrol?

That would be a good idea for the burrows arc.

one tile drawbridge :) reeeeaaally challenging :)

but i like it too, especially the part about the wounded dwarfes ..
i once had a dwarf with a red headwound fall into a mood, he jumped out of bed, completed the mood, and went back to bed, he didn't eat or drink .. but complained a lot when he got back .. ..

Thats why I emphasized 'bit'. Anything that requires more materials/space is more challenging, even if not noticeably so. Also, what I added on AFTER that would even make THAT somewhat difficult.

Oh god, please, please implement this. My fortress guard can go into a fey mood when he has a broken leg, but he can't crawl to the food stockpile when he's starving? Come on! Of course his wounds will never heal if he consistently has to crawl around everywhere to make it fair, but until dwarves try to recover the wounded with more zeal (as mentioned in a req or bloat somewhere) I don't think I would mind if the one time he doesn't get fed during a crisis doesn't cause him to die.

You know you have played to much DF when a cramp causes you to stay in bed for 2 days expecting others to bring you food and water.

This is definitely one of those things I would like to see made better.  Add some extra unhappy thoughts or something.  Make healing take longer, assuming they could actually heal anyway.  Just let the dwarf crawl out of bed and get food and booze for themselves if no one helped them.

Actually, on the subject of injury...

What I'd LOVE to see is some kind of estimated heal time, and if a wound will NEVER heal, a message saying they've become a cripple. That way, when the legendaryx99999 is hit with a cave in you'll know whether its worth it keeping him alive, or if its pointless to even hope.

Even cripples should have a chance for a miraculous healing. But I don't think it's in the spirit of the game to explicitly mention all the possiblities, like hit points aren't mentioned either.
But dwarves should indeed give up trying to heal and try to limp along, using their pick as crutch when none is available etc.

Once we have dwarven doctors, we should be able to get an estimate of healing time, accuracy being based on the skill of the doctor. That would be the most realistic implementation.

Injury hasn't been much of a problem for me, my injured dwarves ONLY come from sparring or cave ins I setup myself. In the sparring room, they either die right out or I don't realize they were ever hurt until they're almost back on their feet, hell once one of my hammerdwarves(Now my only hammerdwarf) got his right arm chopped off, eventually he healed and by the time I realized it he was walking around with one arm. We call him stumpy.and in the case of a cave in.... There is no miner! The miner is a lie, and so is his cake!

What I would like to go with this is auto-butcher. I.e. someoone is hungry so he just picks up a kitten, sucks the blood out. Tears the skin off and munches on the meat.

also, cnnabalism should be possible... think... after a great seige that destroyed the walls the cold winter froze many in their beds. And the rest are degraded to munching on their friends...

This would be excellent for dwarves who "don't care about anything anymore". Or, have a level above that called "sadistic bastard" which all fell and macabre moods give as well.
