i modded in some sentient robots that took the place of kobolds and such. I however didn't realize i had modded their strength too much and ended up with 4 of my legendary hammerdwarves painted across the floor and walls of my entry-way... btw my 4 hammerdwarves had repelled a couple goblin sieges by themselves away very well.

My most active fort has a squad of middling warriors armed with a highly mixed bag of weapons and a lot of sparring scars, and a primary squad of all champion wrestlers who've stripped each other naked.  I have very little metal or fuel, so I can't armor them.  I've yet to get a really serious siege, so I have no idea how they'll fare, but it should be entertaining.  I also have a crack band of champion wrestlers in the Fortress Guard I forgot about and never transfered.  When someone so much as coughs at a pet, they get their jaw backhanded right out of their face.

This isn't a possibility anymore, but remember back in the old days when possesed dwarves would refuse to drop their artifacts, to point of using them as makeshift weapons?  Did anybody ever band a bunch of legendary civilians together into an Elite Furnituredwarf squad?  Cause that would have been hilarious, and probably very effective - a cadre of reknown masons and gem setters bashing gobbos to paste with coffers and floodgates.

My old fort had the best standing military of my entire playing time. Even after I found the demons and set them loose on it, they had but a few casualties.
23 champions. 1 of them 4x legendary, and is my fort's grandmaster. Many others 3x, or around there. Decent mix of Marksdwarves and Melee dwarves.

Lost two 2x champions to the demons, plus my founding miner. And some random donkey.

My favourite fort had about 10 wrestlers and 3 axedorfs to patrol.
I had a population of 90, and had never seen an ambush or anything.
Suddenly, in the 5th year of my fortress, I had an ambush of speargobbos.
while my woefully inadequate army set about attacking, an ambush of marksgobbos appeared.
Then hammergobbos.
Then more speargobbos.
In one day, I had 4 ambushes and drafted all my dwarves as a last stand.
I lost about 70 dwarves and the miasma was so mighty I had to abandon.
Strangely enough, my sherriff slept through it all.
Stranger still becayse she lived in a wooden mansion above ground, right in the middle of the battle.

My best military force?

Deler Litastunol Somrabed Thokit, or Deler Torchblunted "The Oracular Freckle" has been the almost sole defender of my "No immigrants" fortress for the past 13 years. At one point, there were 3 defenders, his wife Delber Tombescort and their close friend, whose name escapes me, but those two were lost to goblin ambushes a long time ago.

Deler is a one-eyed legendary marksdwarf who doesn't really care about anything anymore, taking joy in nothing except slaughter. He constantly patrols the defensive positions overlooking the dual entrances to my fortress, clad in the finest steel plate with his trusty crossbow, only breaking his rutine to eat, drink or go rout a goblin ambush with his masterworked short sword. He occasionally goes to watch the captured goblins in the zoo, which comforts him...

Aqizzar: I think you'll find that your wrestlers will not fare well against enemies armed with actual weapons. Wrestling is useful for other reasons, but as an offensive tactic, it's pretty limited. I usually train my soldiers in wrestling to start out, but hand them hammers and/or axes when actual combat starts. They do decently well.

I had a small squad of 5 champion sworddwarves, in adamantine outfits. legendary in sword, shield, armor, wtrestling and pump operating.

I also had another 20 champions in that fort, of which 16 were marksdwarves, but these 5 would have been enough. impervious to bolts and arrows, fast as bloody hell, and inflicting scandalous amounts of damage. enough to break sieges of 60 gobboes without any realy problem, and they also killed about 12 demons, the other 18 were offed by the marksdwarves.

abandoned due to narrow silk underwear related clutter.

So, you had these bad ass sworddwarves of epic proportions, withstood demons, and goblins(Which I would imagine would have brought trolls), and yet your army was no match for some Silk underwear due to FPS drop?

Yep. i also got quite border with the fortress as there was not that much else to do. It was rich, well stocked, very efficient, cleaned from stone, and had some nice features. But after I spent a few years trying to get my bad ass chapions clean I caved.

Why didn't you just trade it all off?

By then you must've had 100+ dwarves who could haul, load it all onto the caravan, trade it for a couple metal blocks and get rid of it.

I think my military's pretty good. I've got champions in the double digits, mostly hammer or mace dwarves, all wearing masterwork iron plate mail (no flax and I keep forgetting to order some) and most wearing masterwork iron boots and so on (apart from one running around in turtle shell).
They mostly sit around and elect one another mayor.

My best military was back in the 2d version.  I had 12 melee champions, almost of which were solder immigrants trained all the way up; 5 with swords, 2 with hammers and 5 with spears, all outfited with a combination of high quality steel and bronze plate.  I also had 5 legendary marksdwarves.  The core of my military, however, were the 6 'demonslayers.'  All were trained to between skilled and adapt in shields, armor use, wrestling and hammers, then to legendary in both marskdwarfship and a civilian skill, usually engraving (one or two were miners).  They wore high quality steel and bronze plate (with legendary strength and decent armor skills this didn't seem to slow them down at all).  They were deadly at range, and nearly as deadly after their bolts ran out and they charged in with a melee attack.

I never sent them in to the demons before the 3d release came out, but I'm seriously considering it now...

I'm impressed by that last one, and the amount of replies in general.

My best military force...

aww, who am I kidding? I've never had a fort last long enough to use a military, let alone have a great force trained up. Not because they fail, either, I just come up with another fort idea. I have 10 active forts right now

But anyways, my best military force actually consisted of dwarves who were better skilled in swimming than anything else, on account of the weapon rack which designated the barracks being one tile away from a swimming pool (with ramps on the sides, no worries).
