The diary of Psycho. 1st of Limestone.
Autum has come. We're expecting the traders any day now, so we shall soon see how well our trap works.
There were injuries in it's creation, but no doubt nobody would contest the achievement. It's a ten story drop, not for the faint hearted.
From above, it just appears to be a standard defensive ditch. It is anything but.

We still don't have an effective method in place for dealing with unwanted guests, migrants from the mountain homes, but it is not far away.

There have been some minor injuries, and our stocks are running low now.
We have been digging a well area, so hopefully we'll actually have something to drink if, gods forbid, the booze ever runs out.

We'll never have to set foot above ground apart from repairing the traps.

17th of Limestone.
The trap is set. Our prey is on the horizon. The traders, seeking the new wealth of this 'fortress', have come to ply their wares.

We should make them coffins. Note to self, make coffins.

The depot is far above. We must wait a while to make our move.

A liaison has also arrived, but he will find no way to us here. There is no way in or out.

The Diary of Psycho. 25th of Limestone
Today we used the trap, after they had finally finished with their unpacking. I heard them wondering where we were.

They wonder no more. About anything.

I shall never forget this victory.

I ordered a butchery constructed for the traders' animals.

Diary of Psycho. 1st of Granite.
Ah, here's this dusty old thing. I was wondering where I had put it.
A year has passed since we came here, and we have trapped only the traders so far.

Nobody else has bothered us here. Yet.
And we have obviously heard nothing from our benefactor. One wonders what has become of him.

We have established ourselves an effective base of operations. Our well, our stockpiles of stolen goods, our weapons, our workshops.
It all comes together to make something glorious.
Of course there is the guilt of the murder, but I'm sure that will pass.

Must make more coffins! Always more coffins!

It would also be a lie to say that this year together has brought us closer. If anything, grudges are just waiting to be settled.
Dactylatra, for one, has been laying in bed for about six months now with a broken leg.
You can't tell me that it takes that long to heal, but apparently it has.
I begin to suspect she is continuing to damage her leg so she does not have to work.
If I find that this is the case, I shall have to take stern measures.

I'm betting that trap is going to be hard to set back up.

I'm actually using a system of retractable bridges. That in itself is quite difficult to set up. But once that part is done, there is no real difficulty in recreating the trap.

The Diary of Psycho. 3rd of Malachite.
Tragedy struck us today. After attempting to set up the trap once more, Flok dropped an enormous rock on Red.

They were both half a dozen stories up at the time.
Flok overbalanced, plunging to his doom. Red was knocked from his precarious position, and died moments after from the sheer level of injuries he sustained.

We threw their bodies in with the rest of the victims.

Shall we start taking bets on who will be the last to survive? Or the first dwarf to go insane?

My bet is on Dactylatra losing her mind and killing everyone.

That trap looks neat but I don't quite follow how you're making it work let alone repeatedly.  Maybe I'm just seeing it wrong?

Okay, the way the trap works is to have the platform balanced on a single pillar.
To build the pillar, I have retractable bridges at every level.

I build a 5x5 platform at the top on which I place the depot. A bridge connects to it. It retracts to the side which has actual ground.

This takes far less time to set up after the infrastructure is well established. Time is of the essence since we're down to 5.

Diary of Psycho. 1st of Limestone.
I've been busy with the bookkeeping since Red died. It appears he did nothing about it. I can't say I'm shocked.

I ventured away from this 'vital' work for a moment today, to find my colleagues hauling items into the piles.

When I queried what had occurred, they told me they found all this stuff amidst a pile of bones, including lots of booze (which was lucky, we were running low), and a tame black bear.

Amazing. I ordered the area dug to, and sectioned off. The wildlife are too dangerous to confront in this manner, especially with a cargo so vital.

Akroma, there aren't going to be any migrants. Apart from the fact that this is a seven dwarf game, with no replacements, no trader ever reports back.
It's like a clock that slowly winds down.

Of course, should any migrants show up, I will put it to a vote among the living residents to either a)let you in, b)give you a particularly painful death.

Diary of Psycho. 19th of Limestone.
The dwarven traders are back. Of course, these must be a new group, since the others are quietly entombed in our communal corpse hole.

We're waiting for them to unpack to unleash the trap once again.
