I have a suggestion to make an obscure workshop more interesting, to allow the possibility (however remote) of acquiring adamantine in non-mountain fortresses, to make rose gold a useful part of the economy, and to further complicate waste management and immigrant relations.

Two new reactions for the Alchemist's Lab:

Transmute Gold from Base Metal
Reagents:
1 lead bar OR 1 iron bar
2 measures of Golden Salve
2 dwarven bones
1 cheese (rotten)
Products:
1 gold bar

Transmute Adamantine from Rose Gold
Reagents:
3 rose gold bars
2 measures of lye
1 measure of Giant Cave Spider venom
1 dwarven skull
Products:
1 raw adamantine

However, I am unsure exactly how to implement this, and whether or not it would completely unbalance the game.

The only place where you can add new reactions is the smelter.  No other workshop can be tweaked in such a way, at least not yet.

Aside from that, the only problems would be that fluids are out (reactions cannot "find" objects that are inside of barrels) and bones are kind of a pisser as far as reactions are concerned.  Also, there's no way pf defining the quality or state of an item in a reaction (I.E., no 'rotten' cheese).

If reactions can't locate items in barrels, how does 'prepare meal' locate the alcohol to be cooked?

Because cooking isn't a reaction. It's something hardbuilt, meaning while we get to name recipes, we don't get to decide anything else about them.
