Survey on communication in MMORPG's.

Hello, I'm working on a university BA dissertation titled "Analysis of Communication in MMORPG videogames", and part of that work involves using research tools to collect data relevant to the subject.
I come to you with a survey in order to ask: How do you communicate in MMORPG's? This survey is split into two parts: Part 1 is mostly demographics related to age, gender and country of origin, Part 2 is dedicated to chat in MMORPG's, voice chat as well as the concept of Guilds. No personally identifiable data is collected or stored. If you are a gamer who plays MMORPG's, feel free to fill out the survey, your effort will be greatly appreciated.

Heh. From what I understand of polling and surveys, basically no forum is good for survey data. Size and self-selection issues mean they're really bad for reliable data unless you're trying to collect data for that specific community (and even then they're not great). Probably the best thing you can do with them is compare them to actual relatively reliable metrics to show how wildly self-reporting can vary from actual community sentiment.

Still, probably the closest you could get with something like that is either some of the major mmorpg aggregator sites, whatever large-ish gaming forums still exist (B12 doesn't count even a little, ahaha), or by trying at several (dozen) actual mmorpg communities and combining the data somehow or another (iirc there's ways to do that correctly to maintain/encourage reliability, I just don't remember what they actually are, ha).

... anyway, I'll not chime in on the survey because I'm not sure I've played a mmorpg since the 90s or at least early 00s, but regardless, good luck!

Understandable. Still, a pointer to one such aggregator forum would be a good start, as I would be able to look for similar sites and acquire data there.

I'm pondering whether my MUD experience is relevent, but probably isn't enough in scope to make it worth my while contributing, either.

But, if it is, consider also finding fora connected with the likes of https://mudlistings.com/ https://www.topmudsites.com http://www.mudverse.com or the like. (I'm not a regular of those places, that's just a bit of Google-Foo to find places that might list the kind of actual non-aggregating places I'm more familiar with.) If it doesn't totally mismatch with your project ("voice chat"? ...nope, not something I've ever MUDded with, all typing for me, and I'm not sure others use it much!) then it might get you some intetesting additional variation of demographics. And tell me to have a go, then, obviously. ;)

MMO chats are the reason I learned to type fast and accurately. Without being limited to communicating through a keyboard in the early days of MMOs I never would have achieved this.

MMO chats are the reason I learned to type fast and accurately. Without being limited to communicating through a keyboard in the early days of MMOs I never would have achieved this.

200%, I say this exact thing. I wasn't good in actual typing classes in grade school. It wasn't until I played MMORPGs and had a reason to not look at the keyboard while typing that the lessons finally took. Now I can type like 90wpm with a few errors.

I filled it out but realize I may have bungled some of the data since I listed WoW and EverQuest, which I have played but no longer do.

Most of the answers were accurate though.  I used the chat when necessary, but I'm pretty asocial so I tried to avoid interacting with people I didn't have to.  I mostly used text chat with family in groups.

Text chat in EverQuest taught me how CLIs work, in a way, so that was a cool side effect of using them.  I'm pretty sure I could already touch type well long before I played any MMOs.
