The Value-Rounding from Appraisal is disastrous
« on: December 17, 2022, 12:13:20 am »

I feel like Appraisal ruins trading.

With no Appraisal, I get the accurate item value of everything I have, when I show it to the other trader.

WITH Appraisal, my objects have their values rounded up absurdly. I haven't tested this with vanilla Dwarf Fortress recently, but I remember things getting their values rounded to 100 or so as long as they're above 13 dwarfbucks, whereas in the Steam Version it's far more extreme:

"Lastly, I've noticed something jarring with the trade system in this version of the game. Items within a certain range of value have their values just rounded up to the nearest hundred or THOUSAND, and the merchants accept that. Maybe I'm thrown off by a bug in this version where the quality of your gem cuts is NEVER told to you, alongside another bug or oversight where the value multipliers merchants put on items you don't specifically request is NEVER told to you, but gems with a material value of 10 or higher in this version of the game are insane. Red Tourmalines, Indigo Tourmalines, and even Moss Opals have their value arbitrarily set at 1000 dwarfbucks once they're cut -- the base value for these cut gems are 75, 125, and 50 respectively."

I posted something like this on the Steam Forum Discussions. In that version, this rounding even happens outside of the trade menu. Unfortunately, I lumped this complaint in with other weird favors the game does for the player, some of which I might have misremembered the Steam version not having (such as Limestone being absurdly common in 0.47.05 AND in the Steam release).

What do you all think? Am I crazy?

I haven't noticed this in particular but there seem to be a few value bugs (either in display or actual value) in 50.03.

I would recommend you perform some dwarven science. Should be easy enough to start a fort with some gem cutters and dig out some gems, cut them and see if the values are actually skyrocketing or if they're masterful cuts (diamonds cut masterfully can reach 1000). You can also embark with varying levels of appraisal and switch brokers (though brokers learn the skill quickly).

Is the game supposed to show you the quality of a cut gem? I feel like it either doesn't do that or doesn't have gems of varying quality anymore.

basic cut gems of varying quality have never existed (iirc), but large gems can have quality values.

I too have noticed that gems used to be worth ~250 dwarfbucks are now estimated at ~1000 . . .

disastrous? doubtful. trading has never been balanced lol

Utterly immersion-breaking. Merchants take whatever price you label your crap at, as if you're the wisest man in the galaxy despite not doing math good.

I feel like I've wasted my time spent trying to figure out item value.

It is possible that high quality cut gems are worth that much. Toady specifically mentioned cut gems as one of the items whose trade value are buffed now.

again, the immersion has always been broken, because well who tf would pay $10,000 for a 'lavish meal' consisting of a goat bladder and two shucked oysters boiled in a soup of dwarven piss-wine??

Dwarfs apparently. (Or people who have gotten used to being around them and their cuisine.)

Not to mention the fact that dwarves rarely wash their hands, so you are buying a lavish meal covered in all kinds of goblin pus and forgotten beast excrement.

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.
