Well the world tree doesn't appear to be a physical tree, but it's still a way to describe our world.  The tree data structure is very robust.  By mapping the structure to one's entire experience of reality, and then collapsing that tree, one might gain insight into the root trunk of their existence.  I suppose that root would be the core of their self. 

Despite incorporating everything, it's still you.

I swear there's a story about a Norse giant who birthed the world from his spit, but I can't find it, so this will do.

I remember something about the world being formed by the gods all spitting into a bowl or something. Given the nature of our knowledge of Norse religion (ie very little aside from one book written by a Christian) it's probably rather hard to pin this stuff down. Also the original faith was hardly united like Christianity or Islam or whatever, it probably had God knows how many regional variations.

Ragnarok (or at least one popular retelling) meshes very well with event leadig up to (and beyond) a potential nuclear holocaust. I mean, full on allegorical retelling. Or you just need to tell the 'modern' story with a few Norse-name replacements for that bomber-group and their target and...

(Not the only end-of-times prophecy/foretelling that this would work for, but maybe not quite as effortless.)

Guys, I have a problem.

First is the Toady One, obviously.
