Alright, well. Let's introduce ourself to Hades. Ask them the same question we did Venus, in more or less the same way—straightforward, with a hint of flattery.

"You must be Hades."

"Oh, hi, Commander~!" The ship seemed to perk up, eagerly.

"I've been going around meeting the new transfers. Since you know how you fight best, I was wondering if you had any ideas for some refits I could give you, as a welcoming present?"

"Aww, that means a lot coming from someone like you! Welllll, I've been thinking, 'wouldn't it be cool if I had some better parasites?'. The ones I have are kinda... slow, and not very well-armed. Oooh, or what about something to protect me when I'm deploying them? That's the most vulnerable stage of any carrier."

The Commander took notes on a clipboard he had produced.

"Thank you. I'll be sure to get them to you."

Hades' demeanour seemed to change in an instant.

"Yeah, you better. Wouldn't want anything to happen to me in battle, right?"

"Right." Look up, lower clipboard. "Command doesn't put me on the front anymore, but I haven't forgotten what can happen out there. While I've got rank here, you'll be as safe in the field as I can make you."

Smile a bit under the mustache. "Sound good?"

Hades crossed her arms.

"Hmph. Fine. I'm still blaming you if I get damaged."

She swore, under her breath.

The Commander, indeed, had not forgotten what it was like to be on the front. While his days serving on ships were over, his time on the Exeter and with Genevieve had made him no stranger to the rigours of war. It was a shame what happened...

That was why he was posted to the anchorage. He was determined to make the best out of the situation.

"...you've a right to, <title> Hades. I take full responsibility for those who respect my command."
Assuming that doesn't spark a blowup, gently excuse ourself to meet the last transfer.

"Yeah, that's right, coward. Back away from me."

The Commander heard a soft voice coming from behind him after he stepped away from Hades.

"I wouldn't blame her. She means it now, but she won't later."

Turning around, he saw the woman - vessel? - was short and clutching onto a leather-bound book. She reached up, reseating her glasses on her face.

"You've been going around meeting the rest of us. I'm Hyacinth."

Who's Genevieve, anyway? A fellow-officer? A vessel we crewed?

...I've no idea how tough to be on the insubordinate types here. Erring "hands off", for now.

"So I have—I was about to look for you next. You've a sharp eye."
Nod towards Hades, subtle-like. "…she's bitter, but not at me. I can't do much about that while I'm a stand-in for her old ghosts."

Genevieve was... mysterious. She didn't talk about her history much. The Commander didn't know whether she was a ship or a human - while he always saw her as a human, and 'Genevieve' wasn't a typical Colonial Fleet name, some things made him suspicious. In any case, he kept her around because she was a very useful source of knowledge and insight: she knew things about ships that it would be hard to know without extensive personal experience. She was either one of them, or she'd worked around them her whole life. The Commander hoped she'd open up eventually, but in the meantime, it made sense to let her serve alongside him.

"Yeah, that's right, you're spineless! Coward! I wouldn't serve under you in a million years! I hate you!"

Half the mess was staring at her by now. Venus, who was halfway through the chocolate bar, stopped what she was doing to come closer to her.

"Hades..."

Hades looked at Venus, then the Commander, and then stormed out of the room.

"She has triggers, but I don't know what they are. You might be better off asking Venus."

Battle carriers with shell shock. Why did they have to invent battle carriers with shell shock?
Or battle carriers that
talk back, for that matter? The Commander grimaces.

"... I see. Thank you for the tip. How are you?"
Sure, +1

>ask the same retrofit questions?
Hmm, the retrofit questions have been more for veterans thus far. Not sure about that, but I am curious where Hyacinth sees her military "career" going over the coming years.

"... I see. Thank you for the tip. How are you?"

"I'm... okay. I hope."

The Commander nodded.

"Where do you see your career going?"

"I hope to protect the rest of the ships in the fleet as well as I can. Maybe then I'll be assigned to escort someone important, like a heavy carrier."

"Do you have any ideas for refits you could undergo?"

"No, sir."

"Thank you."

I get the sense the Commander can pretty awkward in social situations... we may want to rely on Genevieve more, moving forward.

Sigh. "You know, I had the notion I could drift about a little today and—what, make small talk? Swap reminisce? Too many thorns, not enough time."

...
"...a scout saved my life once, you know. Human. Quick eye, fresh to the field. Bit like you, in her way."

(Is some sort of harem show about ships?)

(Kind of? I admit to being inspired by gachas, but really... okay, I don't know what it is, but yeah, it's about ships. I imagine that soon things will pick up and it will be focused on the war against the Builders, but who knows?

...okay, yes, it's horrible, but I'm kinda just doing my own thing here.)

(I get the sense our military rank prevents us from going that route—or at least, makes it a whole lot harder to do? This feels more like we're playing as some sort of therapist-surrogate, with tactical elements once the actual fighting starts.)
