We played drums.

You found you enjoyed keeping a steady rhythm that drove the rest of the band. (Increased Optimism.) (Increased Calculation.)

The band practiced and performed in the bar that has now been converted to Cos's office. As band leader, Cos was always trying out new music, handing out new sheets every rehearsal. "So this piece is interesting because it was last performed two hundred years ago by a trio of chanting saints! But I've adapted it for our instruments. Let's see how it goes."

Some experiments succeeded, and many failed, but Cos never lost his optimism and upbeat attitude. "Okay, let's try tuning again. And this time, let's really listen for that wavering sound that tells us we're not quite in tune."

You think Cos knew being a musician wasn't really your heart's calling, and on occasion, he tried to get closer to you and understand you better. But you were afraid to say what you really wanted—it was silly, it was impossible, it was forbidden. Plus you were still a teenager. You think Cos knew there was something you held back, but he respected your boundaries. You remained just two musicians in a silly band that is now just a memory.

He signals that he'd like to speak with your door shut, so you close the storm doors.

"Listen, some people saw you cast that spell on the fans east of town," Cos says. "I was wondering whether you might be willing to take on similar odd jobs for the town."

"You don't actually mean in an official capacity, do you?" you say. You hesitate to say "as a town wizard," even though Cos clearly thinks you are a magic user.

Cos shakes his head. "No," he says. "But you know that there are some jobs of a sensitive nature where you have one public title and another, real title—the queen's spies, for example, besides Spymaster Dol. Obviously, they can't be Spy So-and-So."

"Yes," you say, flushing as you realize where this is headed.

"I want you to be Akriton's town wizard—in secret," Cos says. "I want you to work for me. I like what you've done, and I really want you to be on the town's payroll. Quietly. What do you say?"

What kind of arrangement would you like to work out with Mayor Cos?

1.He must publicly recognize me as the town wizard. I won't be some shameful secret.
2.Accept Cos's offer to become the secret town wizard.
