Kingdom bonus is mean. They have an army immediately, and if their capital is put in the right place you can't do anything but lose the territory or move it back. But those mountains are key to the region. So no easy way to keep it when they have a constant +1+1 going.

They have just 1 army more than any other Nation of the same size, that's not mean.

An army is placed at the capital at game start. Said army can march to take any surrounding province. there is nothing I can really do about this given their bonuses. I've been burned by the modifiers way too much past game.

Granted, to prove my point perhaps I should settle on the island? A lot more fun fighting a single foe than three on all sides, and if I win the island I'm in a good position going forward.

Hmm, actually sounds good. I shall be the thorn that takes over the island. (Much more fun than holding large tracts of land
