Backstory:
Agris doesn’t remember much about her mother, as she had unfortunately passed while she was still a baby. With Agris’ father having been born and raised in Khernell, as well as a noteworthy soldier serving the army before his retirement, she had great expectations placed on her from minute one. Having a decent amount of wealth accumulated, her father decided to move to Hestia to settle down, and lived a decently lofty life there with his affluence. Around the age of 14, she began to train under the strict guidance of her father.
He’d become increasingly infuriated when she failed to perform well during his lessons, but never gave her proper instructions on what to fix. Something so simple to him, should come just as easily to his own kin. She endured years of his harsh training, and when her skills were adequate enough, he placed her as a candidate for a mercenary group stationed near their home in Ironclaw on her 18th birthday. She was nowhere near ready nor capable for the grueling responsibilities, but her father’s persuasion (mostly through his wealth) was enough for her to be taken in.
She was terrified, up until the point where she was grouped with two senior members. Their names were Slate and Tanza, and instead of the harsh and strict attitude she faced with her father, the pair treated her affectionately, like a little sister. Slate, the older of the two, was a light-hearted and easy going swordsman, finding it easy to make Agris smile and laugh at his jokes. Tanza was similar to her, a more quiet and reserved Wyvern rider. She was afraid he didn’t like her, but it was clear that he cared, prioritizing bringing Cypher, his partner, to her aid during missions. They both helped her confidence with weapons and combat grow, faster than ever before. While out on missions with her two companions, Agris felt safe, happy. Even her father started to give her praise for her newfound prowess.
The Trio were inseparable and seemingly unstoppable...Until tragedy struck.
However, one fateful night they had set up camp in the wilderness, returning back from a successful mission of wrecking a known bandit hold earlier in the day. On Agris’ shift to keep watch, she found herself nodding off, and decided to take a quick stroll to help wake her up. The fire was also starting to die down, so more kindling would be needed as well. She found herself walking longer than she had thought, and when she returned their camp was in ruins. Their campfire had been stamped out, but she could still make out the motionless, bloodied corpses of her companions. There were another two bodies close, suggesting that Tanza and Slate had fought their ambushers till the end.
Cypher was kept alive, but the Wyvern appeared to be dazed, bound, and heavily injured. Judging by the attire of the fallen foes, Agris quickly pieced that the bandits they had encountered earlier were returning the favor. She quickly freed Cypher from the binds, and upon hearing voices and movement in the distance, fled with the wyvern, never once looking back.
The group were saddened by the untimely deaths of two of their members, and some blamed Agris for it, knowing how she only got in due to her father’s influence. She was considerably weaker than everyone else, and something like this was bound to happen. When paired up with other members, she’d often find herself left behind and quickly shuffled around. No one trusted her to pull her own weight anymore.
Coupled with the grief, Agris’ troubles, both emotionally and occupationally began to pile up. Her father was upset by this, seeing how great the progress she was making just months before. Death was nothing new to him, and the quicker Agris got over it, the better it would be for everyone. And he made that message clear to her. Pushing those feelings away, at least in public, she slowly started to get back to her feet. She now has Cypher as her sole partner, as the Wyvern refused to be utilized by anyone else in the mercenary group. Her father sees this as a sign that she is on the right path, but Agris sees it mostly as a reminder of her past failure. She still struggles to complete even the most basic of routing missions without any back up, and has since resigned herself to take on much smaller tasks for the time being, such as playing messenger for news or cargo.
Even two years afterwards, Agris still has regressed back to her distant and anxious self, now perhaps even worse, with the grief and guilt of Slate and Tanza plaguing her thoughts. She has not cracked fully though, believing that if she did outright give up, her companion’s deaths would be for nothing.
But whether she can shine as radiantly as she had once before, time can only tell.
