Splitting Seed Bags
« on: June 02, 2021, 11:10:43 am »

Let's say i have a seed bag with 50 plump helmet spawns in it. And i only want to sell 25 plump helmet spawns at Trade Depot, or i want to take 25 plump helmet spawns out of the bag for no specific reason. Is there any way to do this?

You might be able to look into the bag and dump half the seeds. The dwarfs should come along and take them to a dumping zone. It might shows individual seeds so you can click on half of them.

It is possible to split stacks at the depot, but I guess seed stacks cannot be accessed because they're in a bag. Therefore, I suggest to dump the entire stack, reclaim it, have it taken to the depot before it can be put back into the bag, and then trade at the depot and enter number of seeds to be sold.

(This likely takes time and it may be faster to make a couple of rock crafts if you only need a little more value to seal a trade deal.)

it is possible to mark individual items in a container for dumping, it's how I get rid of useless seeds like apple pits and peach pits. I just do it from the stocks screen where it's more convenient.

I think it's possible to select individual items within a container for trading, just don't select the container itself, but with seeds dwarves tend to store them inside barrels, and you can't select items stored in containers within containers.
The question is about splitting stacks of items. When you get rid of apple pits, I assume you get rid of the whole stack of them, not one item from the stack at a time (unless the stack consists of a single item, of course).
There's also a setting for whether DF is allowed to mix seeds in bags or should keep different kinds of seeds in different bags (resulting in the usage of more bags, but potentially fewer access cancellation cases).

I sell my useless tree seeds to the elves. I figure, roleplay-wise, they are the ones who want them.

I would, if there was an easy way to retain the precious bags. As it is, it's better to just sacrifice one bag per useless kind of seeds and let it fill up to the maximum level (where additional seeds are just eliminated automatically) than to keep losing new bags as new seeds are produced.

Bags are hardly precious, when they're so easy to buy or generate. Leather is cheap (and can be ordered in bins of 9 hides each) and making a bag takes a tiny amount of time for the leatherworker. Getting bags is not like getting enough steel to clothe a dwarf head to toe, or getting enough fruit in a treeless biome to make more booze than you use (I have some regrets with this latest volcano in the badlands fort. I had no idea how useful trees are!). I really see bags as very disposable, and so long as you disable pots in your seed stockpile, the bags of tree seeds are pretty easy to take to the trade depot each time the elves come calling with their packanimals loaded up with grizzly bears. I then buy all the bags the humans have three months later, if I haven't just made more in the meantime.

I I'm too stubbornly set on self reliance and insist of growing the crops and making the bags myself while at the same time using a low pop fortress and trying to brew all kinds of booze known to dwarf. I guess my skewed perception is self inflicted...

Do minecart shotguns release seeds from bags?
