I hate a proposal just being a line in the votebox but whatever.

My suggestion is fix the problems with the rifle. If we can stop that from exploding (from brand new) it may have a bigger impact than stopping the artillery from exploding (after prolonged use). We can try to improve the mags while were at it.

Dice Gods Say: You rolled a 6.

With tighter production tolerances and the placement of industrial officers by the government we are able to fix the problems with the rifle exploding as well as the faulty magazine. Now we are able to field it in large numbers and replace our old rifles with them. All of the previous problems have been fixed, it now operates as well as any contemporary rifle on the continent. We have also added a blade bayonet to the rifle.

The revision phase is done, after the battle report has been made you can start your Design Phase!

Witchfire 6.5mm Light Machinegun, Model 1900

A top-fed machinegun which uses necked 6.5mm smokeless powder bottle-nose rounds in a 40-round pan magazine.  Designed to be fired from a tripod, yet light enough to be picked up and fired wildly from the hip (with the help of a carry handle that slips over the barrel), it features stunning new advancements in technology such as gas-operated cycling.  Though it does not feature heavy calibre rounds, the bullets should be easily sourced from the same supplier as our Infantry Rifle.

Lead Express 14mm Emplaced Machinegun, Model 1900

A belt-fed machinegun which uses necked 14mm smokeless powder bottle-nose rounds from canvas belts.  Designed to be exclusively fired from a tripod, it features stunning new advancements in technology such as gas-operated cycling.  In order to cut costs, the Lead Express does not feature interrupter gears, and instead relies on "empty" slots on the canvas belts to cease fire.  Once on an empty slot, the user must operate the levered charging handle to load the next round.  The heavy calibre is designed to stop horses and fool-hardy Duchy idiots.

We have one design this turn, not two.

Having a rifle-caliber machinegun capable of sustained fire and mobility is probably more important, at first, than getting one that, historically, didn't have a real role until the 1920s when armor became a thing that was commonplace, in armored cars and tanks and the like.

That is a pretty short design description... which Maxim complained about. ;)

May I suggest:

Quote
Witchfire 6.5mm Light Machinegun, Model 1900 (Bravo Proposal)

A machine gun chambered for the same 6.5mm cartridge as our M1900 rifle. The receiver takes cartridges from the top, which are stored in a 40-round pan magazine, and spent casings are ejected out the right side. It is actuated by a long-stroke gas piston and the bolt rotates to lock. It is fired from a closed bolt, and the gas port is 24 inches down the 30-inch barrel. The sights are entirely forward of the magazine, with the rear sight being a ladder sight including windage adjustment. The weapon includes a bipod, which can be quickly extended and stowed again for mobility. The rate of fire should be tuned fairly low, around 400RPM, to conserve ammo and allow for effective heat dissipation. A skilled shooter should be able to squeeze off a single round at a time. The barrel will also feature a fluted or ribbed design to dissipate heat. Furniture includes a rifle stock with a rear pistol grip, and a wooden foregrip covering most of the gas piston.
Almost chucked a fire-selector in there, but that's probably getting way ahead of ourselves.

I can certainly do longer descriptions.  I didn't want to hit a new GM with a novel of a design, lol

Bravo Proposal works for me.

As we only get 1 vote, I've removed Thanatos's double vote.  He may re-add his preferred vote at his discretion.

I don't mind what witchfire wins, so approval voting for both.

The Witchfire is a prime example of Kalchan engineering with only a few minor flaws. While ergonomically sound and a dream to shoot the weapon isn't as mobile as we had hoped. The gun is still quite heavy and the top mounted pan magazine makes it shift weight awkwardly while sprinting with it, and the barrel itself is rather thin to help with weight causes it to have trouble venting heat quickly though the increased surface area helps. Its really only capable of consistently firing around 320 rounds before it needs to be allowed time to cool off or the gun disassembled and a new barrel put into place which is also rather difficult in the field due to the lack of a quick change barrel. Other than these minor issues the Witchfire an excellent weapon for quick, on the move, shooting in short controlled bursts; though heavier weapons will be needed for long sustained fire in which more than a couple hundred rounds are expected to be expended in quick succession by a single repeating firearm.

It is now the Revision Phase!

Confederation Combat Dress 1900:
Rather than betray tradition and uproot deeply-held sentiments about how brightly-colored a Battle Dress should be, the Confederation Combat Dress is designed for infantry in combat, not battle.

The durable wool shirt and trousers will keep soldiers warm in the cold and wet, and the drab grey coloration makes stains less visible (as well as the wearer).  Sleeves can be rolled up in the warmer months, and a trenchcoat keeps the men warm in the winter.  Simple brown leather boots are bound with flat, wide cloth to both support the ankles and prevent bootlaces from coming loose in inopportune times.  The uniform comes with a leather belt and a leather harness over the shirt, which includes pouches for ammunition and other supplies.  The helmet (a stellar new concept among infantry) is thin steel in a simple half-sphere shape.  The front and back of the helmet tapers outwards both to avoid jabbing the neck and to provide a stubby sun visor, and the helmet comes with a cloth cover to blunt the sharpness and keep it from being shiny.  The helmet certainly won't be stopping any bullets, but should be sufficient against shrapnel caused by enemy artillery.

Patches and rank are sewn into the collars and shoulders of the uniforms.

How do we feel about a new uniform?  Those Duchy Idiots already made one, now they're making us look bad.
