Sigils! Sigils! Sigils!
« on: May 22, 2021, 09:23:44 pm »

One of the things that I like to do when I make my main tavern is to engrave the symbol of the local government in the back wall directly opposite the door.  This got me thinking…

The “existing images” category only includes images for the local government and the civilization.  It would be nice if, whenever a group (such as a guild or a militia squad) formed on site, if they could choose an image that would appear under “existing images”.

Whenever a dwarf does something particularly momentous (such as creating an artifact, or gaining a combat title), they might take on a personal emblem--preferably something relevant to the achievement.

Dwarf Fortress -- kind of like Minecraft, but for people who hate themselves.

It was, and still is, common for individuals and groups to use symbols for themselves. Sigillography and Heraldry are interesting addition to culture as described in DF.

Such symbols should be depending from the history of the owner and his beliefs: for exemple a trade group specialised in stoneware and created in a given country would use symbols involving stones and the hometown while a guild would use symbols related to its work.

Such symbols should be varying between civilizations, such as sun being a symbol for wealth in one and a symbol of power in another.

Yes.  One thing that would be nice is if the game tracked which guild (if any) produced a particular item.  Iirc, in real life, guild usually stamped, engraved, or painted a mark somewhere on the workpiece to show that it was made by an artisan from that guild.  Back in Roman times, the earthenware jugs or “amphorae” were made in what amounted to factories with a small emblem signifying the factory stamped into the clay before it was fired (which has allowed modern scholars to very accurately reconstruct Roman trade routes).  In any case, some more “prideful” guilds might incorporate their sigil as a large decoration onto the item, while other less “prideful” guilds might opt to use a smaller less ornate sigil in a harder to see (but still accessible) place.

On a side note, I wonder if Toady One should read up on heraldry and make a blazon generator…
