Mitsurugi, Lyra

"Mm. The latter may serve to your advantage, but the former is unfortunate. Regardless, you will learn." The goddess eyed Lyra up and down, then took a step back. "Stand there." Mitsurugi pointed to the exact center of the room. "I will begin your instruction when you do so. I believe it best that you follow your instincts for this, but keep your faith in me as you do so."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra nodded, taking her place in the room's center. Whatever this ritual was going to involve, she had to have faith in the goddess before her... Lyra tried to tell herself to believe...

Mitsurugi, Lyra

The storm goddess took up a position a few feet away from Lyra, facing her directly. She began a motion that might have been familiar: Mitsurugi drew her sword, starting one of the numerous forms she often practiced in the group's down time. However, the slow, deliberate slash was aimed not at the air, but at where Lyra was standing - she would have to move, or the blade would cut her down.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Instincts built up through years of experience screamed at Lyra to dodge, to run, to knock the blade aside even, anything to keep from getting sliced up. But no, Mitsurugi had said to keep faith in her.

So Lyra stood her ground. Worst comes to worst, she'd survived things like this before. And if she didn't?

Maybe that was what she deserved.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Intriguing. She hadn't expected the contractor to remain stationary in entirety. Such a thing demonstrated more resolve than Lyra had shown thus far. It was a slight hiccup in her plans, but perhaps Mitsurugi could work with this.

The tip of the katana whizzed past Lyra's face, the folded steel passing within millimeters of her flesh. Silently, Mitsurugi took a single step sideways, circling around the diminutive mercenary and beginning another kata. This one was a horizontal cut, seemingly threatening to bisect her if she did nothing in response.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Even as she felt the air move from the blade's motion, Lyra let out a sigh of relief. It was a test after all. All she had to do was trust in Mitsurugi, like Mitsurugi was trusting in her. With that in mind, Lyra remained still, observing the goddess' blade techniques best she could.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Mitsurugi proceeded as she had for six more cuts, each one threatening a different part of Lyra's body. On the ninth step, she stood where she had started, and gave a slow nod. "You have made an impressive showing of devotion." She did not fall out of her ready stance. "Were I not here, you would call upon a priest - or any convenient swordsman, so long as he were faithful - to perform my half of this portion. Now, however, we continue to the second step."

Her grip tightened on the ancient blade she held, the well-worn wrappings long ago molded to her grip. "Now, however, you must shift your resolve. Some storms must be endured, but sometimes it will come to pass that they cannot be. This time, avoid my strikes." With that, she repeated the first attack she'd made, but faster. "You were earth, but now allow yourself to be as water."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra simply gave her own nod, quickly pivoting around her right foot to avoid the slash and taking a step back to avoid any follow-up attacks from Mitsurugi. She'd avoided the attacks of blade-wielders before, even if none were as fast as the goddess. She just had to keep moving, and she wouldn't get hit.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Mitsurugi proceeded similarly to how she had initially - at first. Each attack came faster on the heels of the previous one, despite it being the same set of forms, and none seemed to be deliberate misses. The assault did not stop on the ninth attack, however. Mitsurugi continued to strike at Lyra, each swing continuing to ramp up in speed and intensity; the goddess was testing the limits of Lyra's ability to dodge, attacking in a furious assault and watching the results carefully.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

As the blade began to blur in front of her eyes, Lyra let her body take control, leaning, dodging, dancing around Mitsurugi's strikes, with Lyra making sure not to reflexively counterattack. This test wasn't about fighting back, after all - it was about careful movement. Moving with grace, like Mitsurugi had said earlier.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Good. She was letting herself move on instinct, beginning to flow with the tide of Mitsurugi's assault. An assault that continued, but seemed to somehow change, slowly but surely. Her slashes and thrusts grew faster and wilder, as the goddess let more and more of her aspects of nature take control. Eventually, it felt like what Lyra was fighting wasn't at all a swordswoman at all, but the wind and rain itself; in fact, she could have sworn she could almost hear the wind howling and see rain falling out of the corners of her eyes. Mitsurugi drove her to dodge about the room, weaving through it in an elaborate yet seemingly senseless and wild pattern, speaking with nothing but her blade and her soul.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Though she tried her best to keep dodging, under the storm of blade attacks Lyra began to weaken and slow. She got hit once, then twice, then a third and fourth time as she began to stagger and stumble. The contractor started raising her arms in an attempt to block the swings. Was this what it felt like to fight against a goddess?

Mitsurugi, Lyra

The defensive gesture was for naught; as soon as Mitsurugi realized the woman was stumbling, her assault ceased. I have failed yet again, and at such a simple task. What good was this ritual if she could not restrain herself from harming her follower while she taught it? Was she really so far gone that she'd actually allowed herself to strike her would-be miko in such a sacred ceremony. I can think of no omens more ill.

Mitsurugi looked at Lyra silently for a moment, her expression seeming somehow more sorrowful than usual. "Let us continue to the third step of the ritual," she said, her voice nearly inaudible. She moved over to the table and sat down by it, waiting for Lyra to take a seat.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra knew she'd failed as soon as Mitsurugi stopped. Nervously she lowered her arms and glanced at Mitsurugi's face, trying to ignore the look of... disappointment that she wore, walking over and taking a seat, uncertain of what to say - or if she should even say anything at all.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

The goddess silently set about placing every single element of the tea set just so, carefully arranging it before Lyra and herself in dead silence. The way she moved was somehow reminiscent of her swordsmanship, holding a grace and familiarity to it that only came from endless repetition. The teapot seemed to already be full of traditional Japanese tea, heated and ready to drink; the cups steamed lightly once she filled them with such.

"Now that this ceremony is complete," Mitsurugi began as she picked up her own cup, "you may speak to me while you sit at this table." She made an admirable effort at maintaining her calm. The tea ceremony had helped, but she was still unsettled down to her spirit. "In normal cases, of course, you would be arranging and serving, but you have not learned yet. Ask me whatever you please."
