Mitsurugi, Lyra

Mitsurugi looked down, eyes falling to the table. I suppose these questions were inevitable. It was natural for the woman to want to know why her goddess was in such dire straits. "I failed." She shook her head. "There is more to the story, but ultimately, it ends with my inability to protect those who placed their face in me. I saw the Trespassers consume everything I knew and loved, felt the faith of my worshippers break and shatter alongside their bodies, and I was left adrift with only the misguided souls that bound themselves to my sheath for sustenance." She breathed slowly, deliberately, trying to avoid breaking into tears.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra stared at Mitsurugi. After a few moments, she got up from her seat, walked over to the goddess' side, and hugged her gently. "Mitsurugi... I promise you, I will do all in my power to ensure you never have to experience that again."

These words Lyra knew to be true, somehow, even when she doubted everything she'd said before.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

The goddess stiffened at the unexpected contact. The thought of chastising Lyra for this breach of conduct came across her mind - or even of punishing her for her insolence, though that was hastily and furiously dismissed. Instead of pushing the mercenary away or scolding her, however, Mitsurugi simply let the tension out of her muscles after a moment. The kami almost seemed smaller as she let go of herself for just a moment - almost seeming as if she were just another mortal. ". . . Thank you, Lyra."

She allowed the hug to persist for a bit more time before she disengaged, lightly pushing Lyra away. "I should not be the one protected by you, however. Regardless of my shame, it is still my duty to protect those mortals who have chosen to give me faith. This includes you, and your prayers in times of need or desperation."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra reluctantly broke off the hug once Mitsurugi pushed her away. The contractor reminded herself not to go digging into how Mitsurugi fell. Not when remembering was clearly so painful. "No offense meant, Mitsurugi-sama, but we're working together now. That means we protect each other. It's gotta go both ways. Understand?"

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Why are mortals so obstinate about everything when it comes to my station? She understood the sentiment Lyra was trying to convey, but if anything, it just made Mitsurugi feel unworthy - and, if she were being honest, slightly offended. "Your devotion is sufficient enough. Fulfill the duty you have taken upon as my priest; that will protect me."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra nodded, seeing that Mitsurugi's reaction to her words wasn't the best. "As you wish. Though..." Lyra sighed, more than a little embarrassed at the ignorance she was about to admit. "I've... Never really been much of a recruiter for anything before, much less a goddess. How would you suggest I go about trying to recruit or attract followers?" She knew Aurora had told her some of those ways already - espousing the good qualities, demonstrating powers, solving problems in the name of said goddess, and so on - but maybe Mitsurugi could elaborate or mention some other way Aurora hadn't brought up.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

"There are many routes. Direct demonstrations of power often work, but some require more or different methods. Exemplifying virtues in my name can convince some to do the same, and a few may be swayed simply by telling them of me and what I have to offer to a potential convert." She paused for a moment, thinking. "I understand that my domains are something many find intimidating. I do not know the solution to this, beyond explaining further what my true role is and where I fit into the natural cycle. In ages long past, many cursed me for bringing storms, not knowing of how I had worked to ensure they would come only when they were prepared."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra nodded. Much of it was similar to Aurora's advice, but perhaps Lyra could get specifics on one method in particular. "You mentioned demonstrations of power... How would I make such demonstrations? Would that require you to be present, or could you lend me some of your power for the sake of a demonstration, or..." Mitsurugi had mentioned other rituals, but the only one Lyra'd participated involved dodging sword strikes like raindrops - a feat that she wasn't sure would impress people, considering her lack of skill...

Dani and Joan, Spray

Dani had gone to work tracking down the more deflated soul he'd notices, but when he was about to try the door, he noticed he could sense some more... normal, souls. After thinking about it, he let his hand drop from the door and instead went to one with only a human in it before knocking.

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Mitsurugi nodded. "I can, in fact, grant you power, or act with you as an intermediary. At least, if my strength is sufficient to do so. It would be more powerful were you properly made a miko, but that does not appear to be an option for the time being. Unfortunately, much of my power as a deity is. . . wide scale. It is difficult to demonstrate safely."

Mitsurugi, Lyra

Lyra just shrugged. "Even the ability to call a thunderstorm on command would help convince people of your power - and I'd argue that's the most important thing." Lyra thought for a moment about Mitsurugi's comment - not being able to make Lyra a miko, and tentatively continued, "And... would it be possible to attempt the ritual again?" The contractor knew what was coming this time. She'd be able to do better. She just hoped Mitsurugi would be amenable to giving her another chance.

Dani and Joah, Spray

Maxwell had been busy unpacking his things - he didn't much feel like questioning how they'd been brought to his room - when he heard a knock on the door. After what had happened back in the other world, Maxwell had half a mind to let whoever it was wait, but rudeness wouldn't help any. Heading to the door and opening it, the rookie said almost automatically, "Maxwell Schiff, how may I help you?" He wasn't sure what to make of the shotgun-wielding guy who looked like he was in a band about screaming a lot, but he didn't look like a goddess who wanted to confront him about his outburst, so he figured he could spare the time.

Dani and Joan, Spray

The man nods, sticking up two fingers and giving a quick wave. "Ah, We're new here. Figured I ought to introduce myself to people. Met that Aurora chick but her and someone named "Spicy" went off to discuss something all secret like so I wandered off looking for the other big presence. Looks like they're talking to someone so I decided to talk find out who you are instead." Dani shrugs, sort of hoping Max didn't take offense to being his second choice but also not really caring if he did.

"We? Whatever. It's nice to meet you, I guess..." Spray nodded at the mention of Spicy. "Yeah, I... don't know much about her, if you mean to ask me about her. I'm just some rookie got hisself pulled into something bigger than he expected is all. You?"

Dani and Joan, Spray

Dani considered telling Max about Joan, but assumed he'd understand in short enough time. Also, it was fun to fuck with people like that. With that rather quickly decided in his head, Dani responded with a shrug. "Oh, I got more than you at least. Lord Death gave me this contract, was kind of cagey on details but that's normal for him. Showed up on the bank of this river and a ferryman helped me across and I got the basics from Lord Death on the way. Promised extra credit but I'll be honest, I somehow think that I'm not going home until Joan here is a Death weapon."  He hefts the shotgun up by it's strap, indicating that it's the aforementioned Joan.

Dani and Joan, Spray

Maxwell stared at Dani and Joan for a few seconds.

"You're fucking with me. I really don't like that. Have a nice day." The way Maxwell said the last sentence made it clear he wished the exact opposite. He moved to close the door, but not too quickly in case Dani actually had something important to say.
